yeah i strongly dislike that show (from what I've seen of it) and its formula .. the lead character's voiceover bits over the dramatic indie song playing at the end of every episode like.. "sometimes, ... in life, you learn a little... and sometimes in life... you don't... and sometimes, love just might surprise you.. and in the end... " blah blah blah every time

Don’t agree. I watch every single movie, and over time lots of rewatches. Most stuff I buy is not available for streaming. Now available in high quality, easy access, easy to use and share with the family.

I wouldn’t mind the $2000 I’ve spent on netflix if I ever watched it. Only reason I’ve had netflix the past five years, is because of my wife. However, I don’t feel like she watches it a lot either.

Not sure if that’s a compliment, or an insult. Either way, I will rewatch Testament Of Youth now. Saw it for the first time in 2020, and really enjoyed it. Fits in with my current run of watching movies made in 2014.

I think that's totally a fair reading. but it's pretty milquetoast in that regard. "Boo hoo, I can't put my radish slices on my foamy emulsifications any more, I'm gonna go start a food truck."

I'm not suggesting the narrative doesn't have any merit. I'm confidently stating that its execution of food and hospitality as a backdrop of those themes is very surface-level. Like they cobbled the plot together from a quick scan of the Food & Wine archives.

It’s not a masterpiece of filmmaking, but we both had a good time with it. The acting seemed really natural (more than in most other movies, like everyone was having fun making it).

I know chefs that have done similar things irl. There’s power in fully controlling what you make, and how you present it.

Totally agree. And I think the movie completely fails at portraying his retaking of that power. By showing his "fancy cuisine" as nothing more than a gastropub checklist, there is virtually no emotional resonance when he gives it up to start a food truck. I do think there are some genuinely warm moments when he connects with a new socioeconomic audience, but nothing much deeper than that...

There's literally more industry authenticity in this two-minute clip than in the entirety of Chef:

A bit harsh, but I will probably give that show a chance down the road, even if I seldom watch tv series at this moment in time.
