Jorge wrote:It's not at the top of my list, but it's a perfectly structured film with super satisfying build-up/payoff arcs, absolutely gorgeous cinematography, some extremely exciting action sequences, winsome performances, and even some dramatic weight. From this list of nominees, of which I think only 4 are truly great movies, it's my number 2 behind The Fabelmans. I think it's probably the best massive blockbuster we've had in years
I'm sure all of this is true. I still haven't seen it. I was just being a grumpy asshole the yesterday. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to see it on a large screen at some point.

Of the nominees that I've seen, I'd go:

Women Talking
Banshees
Tar
Everything Everywhere All At Once
Fablemans

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Women Talking doesn't stand a chance. But if Banshees somehow manages to win this thing... ? :heartbeat:

Banshees is the only one I could imagine taking it if EEAAO somehow doesn't sweep, but it would be a huge controversy

Usually the favorites here win:

Spoiler: show
Check out the latest 2023 Oscar odds below.

2023 Oscar Odds – Best Picture

Odds To Win Academy Award For Best Picture
Film Odds
Everything Everywhere All At Once -165
The Banshees Of Inisherin +225
Top Gun: Maverick +1000
The Fabelmans +1100
All Quiet On The Western Front +3300
Tar +3300
Women Talking +6600
Avatar: The Way Of Water +10000
Elvis +10000
The Whale +10000
Odds as of January 26

Everything Everywhere All At Once, leading with 11 nominations, is the clear favorite to take home Best Picture with -165 odds. It has clearly gained some reputable nods from The Academy with nominations in all major categories, including directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert being minus-money favorites to win Best Director too.

The family drama has been heralded as inventive and creative, featuring thrilling martial art scenes and overall plot. Kwan and Scheinert have executed a story about a Chinese immigrant, played by Michelle Yeoh, on an adventure to rescue human existence by visiting versions of herself in parallel universes in an attempt to stop the person who intends to destroy the multiverse. The film has already received 14 various recognitions, including winning the Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Best Picture.

Beyond Everything Everywhere All At Once, there are a couple of other contenders like Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees of Inisherin, Joseph Kosinski’s Top Gun: Maverick starring Tom Cruise, and Steven Spielberg’s The Fabelmans. We’re betting on Everything Everywhere All At Once to maintain its momentum through award season and add to its growing list of accolades.

2023 Oscar Odds – Best Director

Odds To Win Academy Award For Best Director
Director Odds
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All At Once) -140
Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans) +110
Martin McDonagh (The Banshees Of Inisherin) +1200
Todd Field (Tar) +2000
Ruben Ostlund (Triangle Of Sadness) +5000
Odds as of January 26

Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert are favored to win Best Director after winning the Critics’ Choice award for the same category. The directing duo, known better as the Daniels, began their careers as music video directors. Everything Everywhere All At Once is just the second feature film directed by the two and has already received 50 nominations this year.

Obviously, any movie that Spielberg has anything to do with has a little extra magic. The American will be on the hunt for his fourth Academy Award, a number that is shockingly low considering his years in the industry. Nonetheless, he’s a director to keep a close eye on every year. It’s evident both Kwan and Scheinert are getting credit where it’s due – I expect the trophy to be in their hands.

2023 Oscar Odds – Best Actor And Actress

Odds To Win Academy Award For Best Actor
Actor Odds
Brendan Fraser (The Whale) -150
Colin Farrell (The Banshees Of Inisherin) +250
Austin Butler (Elvis) +350
Paul Mescal (Aftersun) +1500
Bill Nighy (Living) +2500
Odds as of January 26

Odds To Win Academy Award For Best Actress
Actress Odds
Cate Blanchett (Tar) -165
Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All At Once) +110
Ana de Armas (Blonde) +2000
Andrea Riseborough (To Leslie) +3300
Michelle Williams (The Fabelmans) +3300
Odds as of January 26

It’s the luck of the Irish with two Irishmen being nominated for Best Actor with Colin Farrell and Paul Mescal cracking the list. But it’s a tight race with Brendan Fraser leading his fellow nominees. Fraser excelled in a tear-jerking role as an overweight English teacher trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter. His portrayal has already earned him Best Actor accolades in the Critics’ Choice awards.

Farrell gets his first Academy Award nomination for a film set off the coast of Ireland in which his character relentlessly looks to repair a lifelong friendship. Austin Butler is also a strong contender for his impersonation of music legend Elvis Presley. The Elvis legacy has felt more apparent of late, especially with the unexpected tragic passing of daughter Lisa Marie Presley. Butler could offer a chance for a profitable value pick. However, Fraser’s acting evoked deep emotions and showcased a side of him we haven’t seen before.

As for the women, Cate Blanchett is the favorite with -165 odds for her eighth time being called by The Academy for Best Actress or Best Supporting Actress. In Tar, Blanchett stands tall as a famous, bossy musical conductor. The psychological drama features powerful self-dialogue that has film fanatics questioning conventional movie producing and writing.

Close behind Blanchett is Michelle Yeoh, whose nomination could lead to her and Everything Everywhere All At Once becoming the 13th film to win both Best Picture and Best Actress. Yeoh, the first Asian female to be up for the award, symbolizes female strength in her role, filling her scenes with action and strength throughout. She has already taken home the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and it’s in this category that I’m sensing an upset.

Also, hasn't the movie with the most nominations *not* won Best Picture most of the time? I thought I heard that on a podcast recently.

I’ve used that site to check historical odds for the 2010-2014 years that I’ve been watching movies from recently, and the odds favorites seem to have won every year.
