Why didn't any of you tell me Sunny Day Real Estate ruled so hard?

Withholding key info is basically lying. I feel lied to.

Wth bro
I heard some of their late 90's stuff back in the day and thought it was neat enough but didn't feel compelled to dig any deeper.

I gave Diary a listen for the first time just yesterday. It's wildly impressive, especially for '94.

On a completely unrelated note, it's crazy to me that Carlos D (ex-Interpol) hated playing bass. He's responsible for some of the tastiest basslines of the 2000s, and yet he apparently wrote and performed them reluctantly.

Truly bizarre. Bass is fun as hell.

Which musicians do you think you could recognize just by their tone/phrasing/style - whatever you wanna call it? I mean if you would hear 20 players playing the same song one after another could you spot that player from that group?

I started to think about this when I was listening to Wayne Shorter and immediately recognized the trumpet player as Lee Morgan. I'll list a couple of "golden era" jazz players I think I would recognize because I was thinking this more in that context, but feel free to list players from other genres too.

Trumpet players:
Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard and Chet Baker. I think they all have very distinct styles. Lee and Freddie play with such a force that at times it sounds like bullets coming out of the horn. Chet is pretty much on the other end of that spectrum.

Sax players:
Lester Young and Bird. Both have pretty unique styles. Lester has such a soft and warm tone and Bird's phrasing is somehow instantly recognizable.

Piano players:
Thelonious Monk and Bill Evans. Again players who are in a way on the opposite sides of the spectrum. All I need to hear is the first few notes from "Coming To The Hudson" and I know it's Monk. Same goes with 'Young and Foolish' by Evans.

Probably not any of the jazz greats you listed.

I think anyone could pick out Frusciante or Claypool from a lineup. I guess distinct tone does a lot of heavy lifting there.

Interesting question!

Yeah Claypool was one of the first that came to my mind outside of jazz.

I’d like to have a good list of essential live albums. In fact, I have been cooking this up as the next journey, but while I know many of them, I just get the sense I don’t have what I need yet.
