When my Dad was early into his dementia but still living at home he went missing a few times on walks. Once my sister found him a few streets away and he ran away from her into the bushes. Some construction workers working on a house nearby ended up helping her coax him out and back home with her.

I will always remember the day not long after my brother and I walked him into the hospital holding his hands when it was apparent he could no longer live at home. It was a really sad day.

stepfather was complaining the last few days about it hurting when he swallows and a little trouble breathing. I pick and chose my fights with him because of his age, stubbornness, being italian and a marine (as people know there are no ex marines)

last night was the 3rd day in a row he said he felt uncomfortable (yesterday he finally said he wasnt feeling well). i asked if he wanted to go to the hospital and he said nah will see how i feel tomorrow. well yesterday (2nd day i knew) i left him no choice. called the ambulance and while we waited he said to me and my brother "just leave...let me die here alone". christ i was not ready for that.

he stayed the night in the hospital and im waiting to hear from them today but the initial diagnosis is possibly pnuemonia

Quite possibly the most emotional day of my life

While they cleared him to be discharged his wish is to not take his meds or use his oxygen. The hospital called me and told me he had been asking out loud if they would just let him die. He was convinced I was at the hospital all morning but they wouldn’t let me see him. I left work early when they called and the situation was as reported.

He asked me why they would t let me see him and I tried explaining I was at work but he was having none of it. I talked to his case worker and there will be a hospice consult tomorrow. I’d have rather he stayed at the hospital but he was adamant he wanted to be home to be with my mom.

On the way home I asked if he wanted me to drive through the place he grew up but again was met with I just want to go be with your mom. About a mile from home he asked me to take the highway. I asked what highway and he said the one to see my wife.

Got him situated at his place and called the relatives to come and talk to him. While I’m not a believer in prayers I will be saying one tonight that he gets his wish through the night. I’ve cried just about enough wishing I could ease his pain…

There is a baboon in me . . . clambering-clawed . . . dog-faced . . . yawping a galoot's hunger . . . hairy under the armpits . . . here are the hawk-eyed hankering men . . . here are the blonde and blue-eyed women . . . here they hide curled asleep waiting . . . ready to snarl and kill . . . ready to sing and give milk . . . waiting—I keep the baboon because the wilderness says so.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.
