The purchase put Crow in an unusual position: He now owned the house where the justice’s elderly mother was living. Soon after the sale was completed, contractors began work on tens of thousands of dollars of improvements on the two-bedroom, one-bathroom home, which looks out onto a patch of orange trees. The renovations included a carport, a repaired roof and a new fence and gates, according to city permit records and blueprints.
I know friends gift each other half million dollar globe-spanning vacations, but do they also renovate each other's parent's homes? I better get to work or imma lose some friends...

That's actually totally fine as it's Crow's house now and Thomas does not have to disclose his mother's behavior. The sale to Crow should have been disclosed though as that's a common financial fraud tactic (like renting your house to your kid for $45k/month).

billionaires are totally interested in real estate in otherwise delapidated neighborhoods with meaningful investment otherwise. this had nothing to do with anything other than a good value opportunity.

i just had a student tell me his dad's company has him listed as an employee with a 401k, even though he doesn't work for the company at all. His dad makes initial contributions to the kid's account out of pocket, then supplies the company match.

The vacant lots that the Thomas family once owned have been replaced by pristine two-story homes. An artisanal coffee shop and a Mediterranean bistro are within walking distance. Down the street, a multicolored pride flag blows in the wind.
Just the way it was when Clarence was growing up...

Honest question: Could Clarence say he did what he did (not disclosing and taking lavish vacations) because Harlan told him to and Clarence didn't want to say no because he was nervous his mom would be thrown out on the street?

He was held hostage!
