What movies are you watching?

Terminator 1 & 2, Total Recall and Predator are genuinely great movies. Then there are movies like Commando and Running Man that are silly, but a lot of fun to watch.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Might go see The Covenant since I'm actually still a big Guy Ritchie fan and Gyllenhaal is always good, but I avoid modern war movies like the plague.

I saw the new movie Beau is Afraid, directed by Ari Aster and starring Joaquin Phoenix. A lot of people are going to hate this movie, and I am one of them

Happy to share more thoughts soon after some people see it. I hope they like it, which is certainly possible. It is active and engaging throughout, or at least through-most. I just don't think Aster has the stature or the wisdom to pull off something quite so indulgent. Guy has made a good horror film and and arthouse Wicker Man. It took Charlie Kaufman three decades to work up to making stuff like this. (And that's really what this is, a Charlie Kaufman-style piece).

There were people in the theater who were really into the wild, surreal comedic elements in the first two hours of the movie. And I won't begrudge them that. Like I said, it's active and engaging. But I think Aster is going to lose even those people with all the waa-waa-mommy stuff that dominates the last section of the movie.

I wish I had gone to see this instead. This one I'm actually interested in and does look good to me. But I'm a silly little movie boy, so I felt it was my duty to see a movie like Beau

I saw it, too. Yeah, just ok. Whatever. My favorite part is that they decided to never show the face of theactor playing Michael Jordan, so he comes off looking like a rude, unprofessional teenager, constantly looking at art on the wall or turning away from the only conversation happening in a room. There's one sequence where the Jordan family is getting out of a limo and some executive greets the agent, the mother, and the father, then just turns and walks away before Michael even gets out of the car. Just silly stuff
