Just pretend you're a narcopath and they might be more relatable.

I wasn't talking specifically about Succession but yeah, that show gets that facile "you are only allowed to care about good and moral characters" take too.tree_ wrote:Agree about succession. The Dahmer series on Netflix is a great example. Of course he was horrible and totally creepy, but it was so well done, they actually made him relatable at moments. And that doesn’t make the viewer a serial killer.Jorge wrote:This applies to movies and to TV.
One observation I'm sick of hearing, and that people seem to think they're hot shit for making, is "durr, you’re not supposed to relate to [X character]! They’re not a good person! You missed the point if you relate to them!"
It's like fuck man. If they were well written, of course I related to them. Characters should be compelling, and good writing makes us care for what happens to them and connect with their humanity regardless of their specific circumstances. Otherwise what’s the point.

"You missed the point" is so pompous. Most times there are multiple interpretations, and usually the artist isn't even trying to make the point these idiots want it to be about.Jorge wrote:This applies to movies and to TV.

recoil at the reduction of film art in particular, but narrative art in general, to exclusively a medium in which to delivery character. this fetishisation narrows the possibilities of the form, and is in most cases just a reflection of our particular historical juncture -- the individual in its atomised ascendancyJorge wrote:This applies to movies and to TV.

but, j, i agree that this kind of moralism that pervades viewing and "interpreting" art is no good

Re: Post Random Movie-Related Thoughts You Have
Seems like Beau is Afraid is similar to Synechdoche, New York. A lot to read into and unravel, but not necessarily entertaining. Looking forward to seeing it.

That sounds great. I love Synechdoche NY and I do actually find it "entertaining," though we may be defining that differently

Yeah, I agree and also loved NY. I guess by "not necessarily entertaining" I mean my wife will hate it.Jorge wrote:That sounds great. I love Synechdoche NY and I do actually find it "entertaining," though we may be defining that differently

Enjoying hearing Ari discuss where he's coming from. I think this could be very helpful.

The more I hear about it, I'm actually quite afraid my anxiety will be triggered by this movie and give me a full on panic attack. Sounds like a true horror movie for me.

Synecdoche and I'm Thinking of Ending Things are the closest parallels, but they only make Beau look worse by comparison. Beau is shallow where they are deep.
Go see the movie, guys. I want to say negative things about it without feeling like I'm influencing you (I know you all hold me in very high esteem and put a lot of stock in my opinion of things)
