It's just got no hook, you guys. It's the exact kind of Pearl Jam that turns me off. The Riot Act/A portion of Binaural side. Avoidance of melody.

That's why it's good.

"It doesn't have a hook, therefore it's good" is exactly the kind of silly reasoning RM gets criticised (rightly) for.

We may have different definitions of a "hook", but for me a song needs something to draw me in.

It's good for other reasons too though.

I like the bridge, but the rest doesn't do anything for me.

Yeah I was gonna mention the bridge. I don't need to tell you that you can always trust PJ to write a decent bridge if nothing else

If I ran away naked, there'd be a "Yellow moon" joke in there somewhere.

I guess my main problem is the "chorus". Even though it's only a few words, it feels too stretched out and forced. I could warm to the verses if the chorus was better.

The chorus isn't amazing. I wish Ed had done more with that melody. All I can say is that I think it brings a nice moroseness to the proceedings. The song is meant to have that melancholy contrast of beautiful and dark.

Saying Yellow Moon is the weakest song on the album is where freedom of speech ends.

I think the music is very well put together, but vocal melody is about 60% of my enjoyment of a song - I hopped on the Pearl Jam train because it felt like Eddie was talking to and about me - so if that doesn't work for me, it drags the song down. I feel like that's why I'm not a Riot Act fan - there's a deliberate lack of melody on that album.

I also don't like the delivery of the second lines: "One could feel the earth vibrate" "As we all do under its gaze".

The bold bits just feel like the "making a complex choice but sacrificing listenability" that exemplifies Pearl Jam at their worst for me.

But hey, it's just one song. I really like this album. I have a feeling in addition to this, Swallowed Whole and LTRP will be the only ones that get a de facto skip in the distant future.

I didn't comment on "Help Help" and "Cropduster" in your 2000 list - we're all different here :)

That, plus Guybrush Threepwood gets you a pass in most matters. I hope you backed Broken Age.

Yeah, I'm just joking around.

I didn't back that. But I might buy it when it comes out.

I think another reason people are liking this is that Ed seems mixed back with the band.
