People driving their kids to the bus stop ...
And picking them up.
When did this start? And why?
Is it paranoid parents or lazy kids?

I live in a subdivision in a suburb and I see it every day. Fat parents picking their fat kids up at the bus stop and driving them a couple of hundred feet to their house.

do you think child sex crimes have increased in our lifetime or have peoples' awareness of anecdotal child sex crimes simply gone up because of the prominence of world-wide news stories?JuanHamm wrote:So paranoid parents?

The second one. The world is safer than it's ever been, but the mainstream media makes people crazy.tree_ wrote:do you think child sex crimes have gone up or have peoples' awareness of anecdotal child sex crimes simply gone up because of the prominence of world-wide news stories?JuanHamm wrote:So paranoid parents?

Re: People driving their kids to the bus stop ...
This reminds me of a story that a foreign correspondent of one of the biggest newspapers around here told a few years ago when she and her husband lived in some suburb in Washington. There was a house being built next to the house where they lived, but nothing was done to it in a long time. Her kids used to go play there and she was worried that they might hurt themselves, like step on a nail or something, whereas the other wives on the same block were terrified that she let her kids go there because "anyone could come there and sexually abuse her kids".tree_ wrote:left the car running.. it was very hot.. it's rural MO.. there aren't many people around.. i'd understand the outrage if it were in the middle of St. Louis or something.. she watches too much newsspike wrote:did you crack the windowstree_ wrote:you're telling me. my mom went crazy when she saw i left the kids in the car just to run in the gas station for a beer to drink on the drive home.. like jeez what are the chances someone is going to kidnap my kids from the carJuanHamm wrote:The second one. Re: People driving their kids to the bus stop ...
Tangentially related.
When I was a young 'un back in the late 70's we lived in a nice suburb about a 20 minute bus ride from the CBD. At that stage all the action was in the city and there were no real suburban shopping malls or anything like that. So if you went shopping you tended to go to the city. If you went to the movies, off to the city you'd go.
Anyhoo, I have distinct and vivid memories of hopping on the bus by myself from that house (the 202 if you want to know) and going into the city to go and check out whatever I happened to want to check out. Most often space lego, but I liked book stores and even record stores as well. I would hop on the bus from the stop a few doors down from ours and head into town, piss fart around and then make my way down to St Georges Terrace in the banking district when it was time to head back home, as that's where the bus stop was at to get me back.
The thing is we moved out of that house when I was going into 2nd term grade 5. That means at the absolute oldest I was 9 years old when we moved out of that house. So yeah, when I was 8 and 9 I used to ride on the bus by myself into the city when I was bored. And I didn't think anything of it.
I don't think that would happen that often today.

Re: People driving their kids to the bus stop ...
On this part of the globe it's perfectly normal that kids go by themselves to school since the age of 7. They walk, ride a bike or take a bus/tram and it's no big deal. Of course nowadays they all have smart phones so parents can reach them where ever they are, but it was the same when I was a kid in pre-mobilephone era. This is something that seems to amaze a lot foreigners visiting here.

Re: People driving their kids to the bus stop ...
I walk with my kid to the bus stop every morning, rain or shine. He's only 6. We really enjoy that time together. Often bring the dog along too. I don't think we drove once last school year (it's about 6 minute walk).
One parent drove their kid to the bus stop 3-4 times a week. They would both sit in the car and stare at their screens (phone and iPad).

My bus stop was probably half a mile from my house uphill. We drove to it often for sake of timing. Almost always walked home.
