These guys are way too old and rich to have any sort of internal battle about the direction of their music. Music is anyways maybe 5th on their list of priorities nowadays; first is the family, then comes funding various charities, then making sure everyone in the 10club organization gets food on their table etc.

It's funny how many fans still seem to think they have the same passion and drive for music that they had in the 90's and maybe early 2000's. I'd say they lost that couple of decades ago and I'm fine with that. I mean Ed's still playing Into the Wild songs on his solo gigs (and two biggest hits from that were covers) and yes, The Haves was the only song he himself wrote for Earthling and that says something about his creative spark. I think it also tells us something how Ed was trying to convince everyone at the Gigaton listening party how "they still got it".

This doesn't mean I don't still love the band, and I would definitely go see them live had I the opportunity. And if they put out new music I'll check it out, but I think I listened Gigaton maybe twice.

I would however love to know know what happened between Riot Act and Avocado. They really seemed to think Avocado was a great record and "a return to the form". They did all this promotion etc. but the songs were just... bad. I think they finally figured that out and went to Brendan asking for help and since Backspacer they haven't really put out anything that would really grab me.

King animal is fine but it's not top tier soundgarden. Bottom tier actually.


And that's no knock on the Album.

But it's a clear safe return from them. What hurts most is how good it was for such a long time apart and knowing how good it would have been moving forward

I’m on team Gigaton is actually a really good (not great) album, but better than Backspacer and the Brendan O’Brien polished tied that is Lightning Bolt.

I also believe Ed is one of the main reasons the band’s music got less creative and interesting due to his creative dictatorship, AND that Stone and the rest don’t really mind or care anymore because they’re too old, have other outlets, and are happy with this cash cow. Except Jeff. Jeff still cares. He needs help.
