I (volunteer) coached my kids at basketball for years and we always paid their fees and participation costs.

Well yes, of course. That’s different from the auction.

But not different from the winter skills clinic thing. Kids pay extra for that, yes?

Here is the email asking me to help. You be the judge:

“Good morning coaches, We need volunteers for our Sunday Winter Session the next 2 weekends. This is a good opportunity to be introduced to the new Quickball structure. The sessions will be 90 minutes. We had 20-25 kids at each of our first 2 sessions.Please respond if you can make it. Your help is VERY appreciated.”

Had you already been contacted regarding your kids participating in Winter Session?
If so, were fees included in this communication?

No, I had not.

I knew that the kids participating had paid to be there. They had likely registered back in January or even December. I was never presented with a registration link or told how much it costs.

I was contacted about a week before it started, not to get my kids to participate (aka more paying customers) but because they were short on adults/coaches and if I hadn't done it the event would have been more difficult for them to put on.

And by the way this was "quick ball" which is not something I would have signed my kids up for anyway. It's basically pre-t-ball ... it's essentially a nerf ball, whiffle bat, and you don't even use a mitt ... it's bare hands. It's as entry level as you get, my kids are already 2-3 years beyond this. They were about the oldest kids there (7) and the other kids at that age (7 or 8) were remedial athletes. Picture RMer Mickey trying to throw a baseball and you get a good visual. It really is designed for 5 year olds that have never played before.

(Wease ... you mentioned you are Team Bammer on the auction, and Team Session on this ... I am actually feeling the opposite and if I had to choose one, gun to my head, I'd feel better about paying for the auction ticket)

The email for the winter session only asked you to volunteer. I mentioned nothing about bringing your kids along and as you say, they were really more advanced than what this offer anyway. I can understand them asking you to pay for the kids’ involvement. They weren’t expecting your kids and everyone else had to pay. It’s the fair thing to do.

I still think it’s bad form to ask you to volunteer your time and effort, then turn around and ask you to PAY for volunteering your time and effort.

The winter session is for your kids’ involvement. The auction is your personal involvement. Pay the winter session, don’t pay the auction.

Then I’m disappearing for a couple hours on a Sunday afternoon when Mrs. Bam was planning to go to a yoga class. So if the kids aren’t with me, I can’t help run the clinic. The 19th and 20th kid being there is no big deal. Having only 3 adults there instead of four is a bigger deal.

I ended up paying for neither of the aforementioned little league baseball things, never heard another word about it, and the guy who paid $2,000 for my timeshare at the auction later changed his mind and isn’t even going to use it so I retain the points for myself.

I did, however, pay for my raffle tickets at the auction

Oh and my team went 10-2 with +67 run differential.

My (33F) family & I went to a new local restaurant last weekend. We live in a small town so any new business gets a lot of attention & talk locally & usually most of the town try to check it out when it first opens, & the initial experiences, reviews & chatter between locals can make or break businesses early on.

Unfortunately this restaurant we had a terrible experience at, we had to wait ages for a table as they were so busy, the staff didn’t seem like they always knew what they were doing, we weren’t that keen on the taste of the food & some dishes came late which was really annoying & ruined the evening for us. They gave us a discount & apologised but it doesn’t really change the experience. We would never go there again.

When my friends & I met for lunch a few days later I mentioned we went to the new restaurant & they were all interested in hearing my opinion on it & I said the above & said I wouldn’t go there again. My friend Mae stared at me like with a face like thunder & said “You do remember this is my brother’s restaurant?”. I said yes I do but it’s nothing personal & I’m just giving my opinion on a restaurant like I do for any business, I was a normal customer there like anyone else. It’s not about it being her brother’s business for me, it’s just a restaurant that I visited. And I asked wether I’m not allowed to have an opinion just because it’s her brother’s place.

She said I was being rude, weird & can’t I just be normal with some awareness & talk about it behind her back if I really want to say all that to save her feelings. And also said that if I got a discount & an apology then I shouldn’t go around bad mouthing it so severely as it could ruin the business for them when they’ve only just started & trying to find their feet. I said I was just giving my honest opinion & then she said I bad mouth every restaurant I go to anyway & everywhere is always a “terrible” experience for me so it’s not like my opinions are valid anyway.

I thought that was ridiculous as there are restaurants I have liked, I can’t change my opinion on the ones I’ve had a bad experience at.

I think they're a little weird for judging a restaurant so harshly that just opened, but that doesn't make them an asshole.
