Kyle Meredith's interview with Jeff will be online in 6 days!

This one is online now. I like what he said about earning to do whatever they want. And at this moment they have earned to play by their strengths. As if he believed they purposely haven't done that in a while.

Oh, thanks, I thought there was another one coming. Is he more optimistic about finishing the record?

I mean I assume he's given updates even if he's not directly involved.

What I took away from it:

It's not close to done. They've all agreed to "take the summer off."

The sessions have been good. Some cool, engaging moments.
At this point they have earned the right to do what they want and that means (to Jeff) doing what each of them does best. And in doing that they push each other to raise their level of engagement because they want to match each other's playing/energy. They also have talked about what they'd want to do as a band that they haven't done yet or want to do again.

Lastly, the hardest part of any album is deciding if it's done. Which songs made the cut?
Should they try to write & record one more?
What's the title?
What's the artwork?

He's hoping it is out next year because that means a few more shows and maybe playing those places they haven't played yet or really want to play again.

Not sure how timing works normally, but he said they'd pick it back up in September and then said it would be cool to have it out next year.

So, yeah, "close."

It was interesting to watch his face/emotional reaction as he described and thought of "a Matt Cameron beat" or a "Stone groove" or "Mike blowing the doors off" or "Ed writing an amazing lyric"... and then him wanting to match what they're doing.

Although, as I read it written down, the Mike comment might have been a pun about pooping. Hard to say for sure.

I watched that interview with Jeff earlier; man, Ed has the worst politics in this band, and Jeff the best

I didn't hear "that they hadn't done that in a while."

I heard that they push each other and this was a natural extension of gigaton and that Mike will melt your face.

in short, Jeff is explicitly anti-Capitalist and abolitionist, which necessitates a multi-liberation approach beyond a two-party choice; Ed is too comfortable with the state of things in his old age, and while philanthropic, is no longer an agitator (he dismisses who he was as youthful rage); as long as he's voting democrat, he's happy, and he wouldn't be like "yeah man, fuck Capitalism" in an interview now

i am not a music industry expert by any means

but as a lay person, it does seem that the evolution of online / apple music as a distribution mechanism for albums may have had a leveling effect on major record labels?

maybe put differently, the major labels which previously used an (intense) indentured servant model to sign their artists don't seem as crazy any more because they can't be, because they no longer have a monopoly on the channels of media distribution?

or am i totally wrong and they still do they just make even more money quietly now due to the amplification effects of online media

just seems like fewer artists bitching about controlling record labels these days

which was a major theme in the 90s (and understandably so, the business practices sounded heinous)

and maybe there is less to hate now

or maybe all the artists now are just assfucker losers who don't protest bc they have no self-respect to seek to preserve
