Pearl Jam and The Brian Jonestown Massacre are my favorite American bands ever but I can’t objectively argue they’re better than:

The Allman Brothers Band
The Velvet Underground
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
R.E.M.

It's not like "best American rock band" is some objective thing you can actually measure in any meaningful way. It's all largely based on popularity and personal preference so stuff like Aerosmith, ZZ Top and The Doors is going to top a lot of lists. Personally, the only band mentioned so far I'd put in my own list is VU

What do we value most?
Pure talent: Allmans
Maximizing ability: VU
Songwriting: Tom Petty…, CCR
Greatness (requires mass audience): Pearl Jam? REM?

The Doors really fit all these.

I mean the discussion is of course ridiculous because it excludes individual artists and then plays this game where bands are eliminated because the name of the singer is up front. Dylan out despite playing with a number of bands over the years because. Bruce out because he was the driving force behind his band and his name is up front (basically same with Pearl Jam for 30 of the 32 years they existed but we’ll count them because they are not called Eddie and the Pearl Jams).

Why did they release a new single that is a live version of Come Back from 2006 and release no statement regarding it? Are they dropping the 2006 tour into streaming services like 2000, 2003, 2008, and 2013? Are they releasing a new live album? What’s the deal here?

It's part of the soundtrack for The Bear Season 2. I do wish they'd put some 2006 shows on streaming though.
