I watched my nephew's through COVID lockdown so I became pretty familiar with Mr Beast, Markiplier and PewDiePie.

Mr Beast is a good dude.

Yeah it's rough. On the one hand, he gives a shitload to charity, but he got his start exploiting homeless people and shit. One of those "just a prank, bro" types, except it was "if I shove a camera in your face will you accept this sandwich?"

Humanity is truly doomed.

He's not that bad. Certainly not on the 'just a prank, bro" spectrum.

Joe might be hearing his name a lot this week because there was an episode of the NYT Daily podcast about him this week. The guy makes content for kids and teens, but it's basically harmless (I'd even contend it's overall a mild positive, Mr Beast is a nice guy ho does nice, fun things. No drama, no cruelty, no bullying).

The guy on the podcast likened it to eighties/nineties cable TV game shows for kids and teens.

This does not foretell doom (we are doomed regardless)

It's hard to respond to you when you're just making stuff up. The guy didn't shove his camera in the face of homeless people while giving them sandwiches. He filmed himself giving people tens of thousands of dollars. He filmed himself giving a homeless person a home. He filmed himself counting to 100,000 and doing similar stunts.

Before he made it big, he still wasn't on the 'just a prank bro' spectrum. That's not his lane.

Just because someone is popular, you don't need to reflexively hate on them and write them off and ascribe cruel motives to them. And I don't want to say that I'm some Mr Beast partisan, or even a fan of his videos. It's the reflexive "this guy is popular-->this guy is a jerk-->everyone sucks" reaction (based on inventions inside your head) that bugs me.

He literally said "homeless people don't care if I use them for views". Like, there's actual footage of him saying that.

He's probably right, especially if they're getting $100,000

As I said, he gives a lot. But he also exploited the homeless to build his empire. Argo seems to think he's squeaky clean, which is downright strange. Dude murders countless cows to make his burgers, too.
