I love it. Great, chunky drop-D riffs in the verses and chorus. Cool dissonance in the pre-chorus. Everyone playing like their balls are on fire. Guttural Ed. Good stuff

Your ears are soft, Hort .epilogue wrote:Parting Ways isn't "bad" per se. It's.... fine. It's the definition of meh and I think the album (as a whole) is better without it.
Habit is trash, though.

Habit is such a great one. And the studio version is full bliss. The band is on fire.

Not to derail, but this is an endlessly fascinating subject to me. I don't think I could ever argue convincingly that my fandom hasn't profoundly clouded my vision of Pearl Jam, and/or any number of other artists whose music I've loved and followed closely for a long period of time. I think this could be a really enjoyable thread premise, not necessarily just in regards to PJ, if people were interested in having the conversation.tragabigzanda wrote:Parting Ways is a litmus test for “your tastes are reasonable” vs “your fandom has clouded your vision.” Song is rear end.
Regardless, I'm a big fan of "Parting Ways" (and "Habit," and "NAIS"). All of that stuff is right in the PJ sweet spot for me.

I could probably count on two hands all of the PJ songs I really do not like at all, and most of those are throwaways by the band anyway.
Parting Ways, Habit, and NAIS are all fine.

How are you guys counting the bad pearl jam songs on your fingers when Lightning Bolt has 14(?) songs? Do you have extra fingers or something?

Most of the songs are fine. The production really drags it down.JuanHamm wrote:How are you guys counting the bad pearl jam songs on your fingers when Lightning Bolt has 14(?) songs? Do you have extra fingers or something?

"never thought you'd habit" might be my favourite example of PJ lyrics making zero sense but still being cool
going from that to "or we could something else"...? oh, how the mighty fell
