I think it would be impossible.
It seems like the passing of time, longing for the past, the weight of regrets, etc. are big thematic components of this film so I get that it's gonna lean on that. I get it. I'm trying to untangle why I never felt even a little interested to see this at the theater, and it's probably because I have no emotional attachment to the series. The movie certainly isn't calling to me on its own strengths.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Ya know, every sequel relies on nostalgia if you really think about it

This is why I think some here aren't giving it enough credit. I also have no emotional attachment to the series, for example, and still enjoyed this well enough.

Nostalgia is obviously a key component to dt's emotional response. But the movie isn't playing a dirty game. Any nostalgia in the film (not in the audience) is character driven. It's from Indy. And it makes sense given his journey over the past 30/40 in series years. I don't think anyone needs to have seen any of the other Indy films to get this one. It stands on it's own.

Which still doesn't mean it's for everyone or that there's any justifiable need to see it. You might still dislike it or whatever. But I don't think it lives and dies on the stuff dt said or the fact of the franchise.

I think it strikes the right balance and is far less nostalgia baity or manipulative than a ton of other examples.

For what it's worth I have no doubt that this is better than Ant Man 3

Probably better than Babylon too

I dunno if anyone has pointed out that these movies began as a purposeful nostalgia exercise on the part of Spielberg and Lucas. Like others have said you can play up nostalgia and still have a good movie (I don’t love any of these movies but raiders and temple are good).
