These I know every note of, and are ranked in order for me
1. Black Celebration
2. Some Great Reward
3. Construction Time Again
4. A Broken Frame
5. Speak & Spell
These I may own, but I never listen to. I have a vague memory of Music for the Masses, but I think its because of the radio single(s). These are in no particular order, just ones I probably have heard a few times each
6. Music for the Masses
7. Violator
8. Songs of Faith and Devotion
9. Exciter
I don't think I have ever heard these or heard anything from these except maybe something played on the radio.
10. Playing the Angel
11. Sounds of the Universe
12. Ultra

Re: Depeche Mode
I hated Ultra when it first came out. I thought it was embarrassing how they were all of a sudden trying to become an overly-dark NIN wannabe after setting the "techno" standard for all these years. But I revisited it a few months ago and really enjoyed it. It is steadily moving up the list and Gahan's vocal performance is really top notch. And my "overly-dark" complaints were largely unjustified as the album is really an extension of where they were going with Violator.

Re: Depeche Mode
The answer to the ever-important '80s "new wave" question of The Cure vs. DM is The Cure for me. The quality of DM's entire catalog is better than The Cure's, but DM can't match the masterpiece that is Disintegration or sprawling "warts and all" epic of Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me.
Also, David Gahan should give Eddie some tips on taking better care of his voice, because Gahan's vocals are still shit-hot 30+ years later. Maybe it's the heroin.

The Cure and DM are such vastly different bands. I've probably flip-flopped a few times over the years as to which I would prefer, but like you say, the quality of DM's catalog is better than the Cure. The last piece of the puzzle for me, and it's entirely subjective, is that the Cure was perfect for me when I was a gloomy 20-something but it hasn't aged with me into my mid-30's. The Cure S/T album and Disintegration were soundtracks to some darker times in my life, and I actually have a hard time listening to them today. Meanwhile Songs of Faith and Violator still feel fresh and relevant.

Re: Depeche Mode
Sooooo.... The second show I ever saw was these guys on the Black Celebration tour, 1985, in Park City, Utah. First show was Van Halen - Fair Warning way before that. Fast forward a few years (and eons later musical-taste-wise)...
I remember three things. #1, They didn't move at all during the show. #2, I didn't get layed that night. (Even though I distinctly brought this girl along to do just that hehe)...
#3, I really loved Black Celebration as an album, and was pretty disappointed in the show overall....
Sigh.
I had all their stuff on vinyl back in the day, and they were right the fuck up there on the favorite bands list during that time, along with The Smiths, Echo, The Cure and REM (the holy quad-umverant, or something along those those lines). As far as concerts go, Modern English was next... Then Janes I think.
