Spoiler: show
I think it's probably the clearest example I've ever seen in a movie, because what other purpose does her death serve? Ethan even spells it out: "if anything happens to them I will chase you to the end of the world" or whatever he tells Gabriel. He may as well have said "this will be my motivation for the remainder of this movie." I don't think he forgot about her at all -- I mean, we don't have a cheesy sequence where we see slow motion footage of Rebecca Ferguson flashing through Ethan's mind as he desperately tries to save Grace, but that's what pushing him to make that insane jump. He wants to protect Grace like he (feels he) failed to protect Ilsa. The Entity wanting one of the two women dead also felt completely arbitrary. Just a really weird and bad choice all around, I think.

Continued my journey through the Mission Impossible oeuvre with Ghost Protocol.

The first 2/3rds of it is awesome. Watching it again, I was ready to bump it up the rankings. I still might. Everything up to the sandstorm, basically, is some top-notch Mission Impossible. After that, it’s ugh whatever.

I watched it and Rogue Nation recently, and tbh I think I like it better. RN is great, but it borders on tedious at times with the exposition. I know they weren't supposed to be big moments, but the reveals of Isla's various allegiances weren't very interesting.

Ghost Protocol is just more fun.

Ghost Protocol is probably the "funnest" one in the series. Perhaps a little too fun for it's own good. But I do like it when it doesn't take itself too seriously - but then also takes itself crazy seriously. I thought Dead Reckoning Part One had that nice mix of playful fun/deadly serious.

Just saw it and this was my biggest issue (other than the story choice discussed in spoilers, which I fucking hated) actually. It felt like slapstick a lot to me. How many times did Tom Cruise pull a face? I was almost expecting him to break the 4th wall and give a Jim Halpert smirk.

This was easily my most anticipated movie of the year. That didn’t help it. Neither did me watching the behind the scenes doc on him jumping off the cliff. Mainly, though, I’m upset with the story choice. I’ll still go to the next (hopefully last despite what he says) one, but I can’t see myself getting excited for it or invested in the remaining story. This wasn’t a bad movie, but of the 6 I’ve seen in the theater this year, I’d put it 5th, just ahead of Guardians 3, and it’s only better than part 2 in the MI series.

Even though I thoroughly enjoyed Dead Reckoning, I do remember thinking that at times it almost felt a bit like Mission Impossible fan fiction.

I'm excited to watch it again, though, and I'm excited for Part 2, whenever that comes.

There's definitely a sense of silliness to the proceedings, even in having the villain being an almost supernatural sentient AI, but I was into it

I started to add the qualifier that fun doesn't always mean better of course, but I think GP was just a little more successful in what it was going for. I think Fallout is a great mix of both aspects.

I'm behind, need to get out and see DR this weekend.

There were a couple of moments in this that felt a little too silly, but they were few enough that I got over it.

Aside from how he entered the train, the silliest moment was some dude in the theater fell asleep and started sawing logs, and after two minutes I yelled, “Are you shitting me?” and the snoring instantly stopped and my 16 year old got super low in his seat.
