I'm happy for Fred. He'll go down as one of my favourite Raptors. But I'm very glad it's not them paying him $43 mil a year. That's crazy. Especially coming off the year he had last year.

He tanked his value a bit at the last trade deadline, so I'm not sure what kind of offers they were getting, but in hindsight, anything is better than nothing.

Now I'm just sitting here talking myself into Dennis Schröder.

The basketball fit will be great. Miami is really good at hiding defensive weaknesses of their guards and dude is obviously dynamic offensively and single handedly solves the spacing issues, the need for another shot creator, all that.

It's his age and contract that are the red flags. If Miami gets him I hope it doesn't cost them everything. Herro, Lowry/Robinson, and three firsts? Idk. The last two first rounders they've drafted? Caleb Martin?

So Boston will probably hit the salary cap with just three players. MLE gets them another solid player, but they'll be hitting the luxury tax before they know it (probably not too far above the limit though).

Overall, I like the new CBA rules. But I'm not sure that the wealthiest owners will give a damn. We'll probably have more of the parity the league is aiming for, but we're probably not done with dynasties.

They are all in with Brown and Tatum. I think it was their best play. I know the C's owners are wealthy, but they won't likely spend like GSW. At least that's what sports radio is saying today in Boston.

Agreed. Not a die-hard fan like most here (mostly due to time constraints), but it's tough to see a path forward without Brown and Tatum. Working within the new parameters makes sense. Curious to see what other moves they make as they approach that second apron.

They will have to get creative and maybe sign a vet via MLE. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I am trying to hang in there with these guys, especially because they seem to be closest to a title vs. Pats, Sox, B's.

That deal is pure madness. Thinking long term, they should have made like Belichick and traded him for sure. I can't dance in the streets over this, though, because they could definitely win the title next season. But that contract is going to haunt them.

I’m not so sure. They’re, what, the second super max since the new CBA? Lots more will follow suit. Though we (presumably) agree that the inability to trade draft picks is really limiting.

First, I think Boston was in an extremely tough position and none of the options were very good. To have their best chance to win a title next year keeping JB was the right move. It would be extremely tough to move on from him and make the current team worse and further away from winning a title, I totally get that. And I understand the idea that the cap will also get higher and so that last year $69m (!!!) won't be as burdensome as it looks today.

My issue is this: Brown is a *very good* basketball player. With the exception of the Heat exposing him in the playoffs two years in a row I've been very high on Brown and think he's exactly the kind of guy you want to help you win. But, he's just that: a very good player. In no universe is he a max or supermax guy. Especially not on a roster that has a real supermax guy.

Tatum's supermax is coming next year. All the new CBA second apron stuff and roster/contract restrictions that go with it right around the corner. I think this will significantly impair their roster building capabilities going forward. Idk if there's any scenario where he would have played this season without the extension, but that would have been much more preferable if it was possible, though I admit it probably wasn't.

It's just too large a share of their cap and will limit their flexibility too much. Idk. If they win the championship next year and then it becomes an albatross after it'll be an interesting discussion at that point whether it was worth it. And I guess the answer will probably be yes.

Idk what they could have gotten for him but from the outside, my play would have been to tell him we love you and want you here but we can't give you the full bag. Make a substantial but much lower offer (5/$200m) and when he rejects it, give him permission to seek a trade. My bet is that nobody out there would be willing to give Boston real assets AND offer him the biggest contract in the game. At this point Boston could increase their offer a bit perhaps (5/$230 or 240) and he might be willing to sign it after seeing that he wasn't getting $300m anywhere else.

To go full Bill Simmons, who was Boston bidding against?

Yes, I think winning a title is totally worth it. Even if they suck the next five years after w/ a bloated roster.

I think the parity is going to make winning multiple NBA championships much tougher, so get yours while you can. And I am partly basing this opinion on the complete bleep show that are the Pats, B's and Red Sox.

Brown lobbied hard to make second team all-nba, so his contract incentive would kick-in for the possible super max. This was all negotiated years ago.
