I'd bring back Kasper in hopes the band doesn't force him to make a loud album.durdencommatyler wrote:When they finally get around to releasing the box set for this one, which producer do they get to clean up the BOB mixes?Thejambi wrote:Sans BOB it probably would have been amazing.durdencommatyler wrote:Honestly, you put a gun to my head --- or to my wife's head --- and made me rank LB among the rest, it would be #7. Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
my first thoughts after 2 listens ( and 3 for a few songs )
getaway - good opener, catchy, will probably grow into a favorite but i need more listens
MYM - i love and I've talked about it a bunch in its thread
My Fathers Son - this one was my most anticipated song on the album and on first listen it fell short, but lets see how the 2nd listen goes. i think i was hoping for a slower song, but i do like it better the 2nd time through, and i love hearing all the bass. i think this will be a grower
Sirens - still love it, i have talked about it in its own thread, but after a couple more listens i really like it even more, and i do hear it as a power ballad, but not an 80s but definitely a November rain/estranged type. Ed sounds amazing and i just love his delivery. Its just a beautiful song and definitely brings out lots of emotions, i haven't heard it yet with out getting chills or in the case of during the gleason interview, tears in my eyes.
Lightning Bolt - really not much different then the wrigley performance and i really liked that one. Im looking forward to this one live in person, its gonna be huge. As far as on this album, currently its middle of the road i think, but ill try to do an early ranking in its appropriate thread later.
Infallible - this on is a perfect example of why i don't like reading or hearing about things before i can form my own opinion, from what people were expecting from a shitty recording of a sound check from outside the building, this thing could never live up so i hate that i had heard anything about it. I like a lot of stuff going on in this but I've gotta give it some time to build it self up after the initial disappointment, 2nd listen helped a lot, many great touches and i think it will be really nice live
Pendulum - this song is fucking AMAZING, only 2 listens in but im pretty sure this is my favorite thing the band has done since riot act and probably including riot act. So much going on yet it seems so simple, im so excited you still have this kinda creativity in you pearl jam, now please give us more. Im gonna have more by listening to it again before moving on
Swallowed Whole - on first listen i was thinking this was my #2 right behind pendulum, lets see how 2nd listen is. I can definitely understand this being compared to into the wild, but in the first listens i think this is better then everything on that album, but that could be the newness talking. This might not be my #2 but i love it
Let The Records Play - people don't like this ? What the hell guys, this is a fun song with some great stuff happening, im definitely a LTRP fan, i can definitely hear the zz top comparison, and its really different for pj and i love that they did it
Sleeping By Myself - they made it work
Yellow Moon - i think this one is gonna be a grower but i like what im hearing on the first few listens, and its got a really nice build happening, even though MFS and infallible aren't as good as i was expecting on the first couple of listens, Jeff definitely brought some of the most interesting stuff this band has done in a long time. Im gonna give this one another listen and just close my eyes and enjoy. Man i like this one a lot, and when i say i think its gonna be a grower, i think it could eventually pass pendulum as my favorite.
Future Days - this one is much better on the album then at wrigley, its not near the top for me but i like it a lot more then i thought i would.
I don't think there is a bad song on this album, they are all good, great or amazing after the first few listens.
I really suck at explaining my feelings about music most of the time, but im in love with this album so far.

Yeah, look, I don't know if this is an awkward stage that's going, in retrospect, to only be evidence of growing familiarity but I listened to this twice today driving around and enjoyed it quite a lot. Yeah, even Future fuckin' Days, for crying out loud.

I haven't had much time with it, but i think it is a great album, without a doubt better then backspacer, and we will see where it falls compared to the other albums in 6 months to a yearBirds in Hell wrote:Yeah, look, I don't know if this is an awkward stage that's going, in retrospect, to only be evidence of growing familiarity but I listened to this twice today driving around and enjoyed it quite a lot. The piano on Future Days really is incredibly absurd. I can't help but think it's at least kind of tongue in cheek.
I can easily imagine Jeff and Matt stifling a giggle when Maestro O'Brien sat down to bang that one out.

i kinda wish there was a hidden track so the listener could be rewarded for having sat through future days.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
I don't really have a problem with this album as a whole. The bad tracks are terrible but the good ones are pretty great. The Sirens single had me fearing the worst but I'm over that now.Dr. Van Nostrand wrote:I haven't had much time with it, but i think it is a great album, without a doubt better then backspacer, and we will see where it falls compared to the other albums in 6 months to a yearBirds in Hell wrote:Yeah, look, I don't know if this is an awkward stage that's going, in retrospect, to only be evidence of growing familiarity but I listened to this twice today driving around and enjoyed it quite a lot. When I inevitably make a mix of all these songs from the boots, I wonder if I'll return to that more often than I do the studio versions (as happened with my S/T mix).

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
LTRP is Stone's only solo contribution. Pretty sad considering how many classic PJ tracks are his. Was that really the best he could come up with for this record?Noaheb wrote:okay so is yellow moon about newtown?
possibly?
also SBM and LTRP completely baffle me as to why they're on this album...
Knowing how bad the band has gotten at picking album cuts it wouldn't surprise me if that weren't the case.
Life Wasted is the last great Stone song.
A PJ album with minimal Stone input is like a Beatles record without McCartney.
