The trip I’m attempting might border insanity.

My family is flying into NYC on Monday afternoon. Tomorrow (Sunday), I’m driving from Minnesota to somewhere tbd in Pennsylvania and then to the next day to meet them.

3 days in NYC. The only for sure thing is Hamilton the night of August 2. We’ve all been to NYC before so walking around, playing ping pong in Bryant Park, and eating pizza and street vendor pretzels is the agenda. Maybe top of the Rock. Maybe a Yankees game. Idk.

Going to Hyannis for the next 3 nights. We’ll spend a day on Nantucket (Wings!) and meander out to Provincetown for a look around and eat at Moby Dick’s in Wellfleet.

Old Orchard Beach for one night as a stop on the way to Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor for 3 nights. Obviously, spending a bunch of time in Acadia is the main event there.

Then to Montreal for 4 nights. My youngest son and I are going to the two Metallica shows. My wife and I are seeing Ricky Gervais the night between. She and my oldest son will fly home on the 13th and then the young one and I will take a couple days to drive home.

If you have any recs for any of these places, I’d appreciate them. I’m also considering stopping in Toronto on the way home. Never been.

Not at all. Just driving because I don’t know how renting a car beginning in NYC and ending in Montreal would go. It’s gotta be cost prohibitive.

With all the stops I would 100% be driving as well. Have a good trip.

My son is hopping on the plane today to start his 24 hour marathon trip back home from Prague, and I am very happy about that.

He was in Budapest last week and had a bit of an incident. He and his mates were at a night club and they were all doing what you do at night clubs, and he met a girl from Perth (his hometown). They got chatting and dancing and stuff and she ended up inviting him back to her place. So they leave and as they are walking there my son starts feeling really weird and starts having difficulty walking/thinking/speaking etc. Looks like he's been slipped a roofie which was totally possible given them dancing etc and being perhaps less than attentive to their drinks as they did.

So he blacks out and when he comes to he is standing outside on the 3rd story of this apartment block, only wearing shorts, no shoes, no phone and no idea where he has come from. There were 5 or 6 doors facing onto the patio but (a) he doesn't know which one he came out of and (b) he is panicked and scared and doesn't know what the fuck has just happened to him.

So in a quality bit of poor decision making, decides he has to get out of there and the only way is down over the side of the building. So he manages to clamber down the top and 2nd level but has to jump down to the ground (paving stones) from there. And with no shoes on manages to fuck up his feet as he does.

So now he is lost, limping and mostly undressed. No phone, no idea, 5 in the morning.

He manages to convince someone to let him use their phone and tries to get in contact with his mates via Messenger (who the fuck even knows anyone's phone number these days?) but no joy. All are passed out in a post-nightclub coma back at their apartment.

He doesn't know the address of the place but remembers going to a particular tourist spot near there that day and figures if he can just get back there he will be able to find his way back. Enter the Spanish superstar. Random dude from Spain spots him and asks if he is alright. Son says not really and tries to explain what has happened to him. Spanish superstar literally walks the 3 km or so with my son who is effectively having to hop all the way because his foot is fucked up from the jump back to the place then makes sure he gets back to the apartment too.

Gets to the apartment and goes ballistic at the door to wake someone up them proceeds to tell his story. His mates can see he's still fucked up so throw him in the shower and get him to finally calm down.

They ended up spamming his phone until the girl answered, got the address and went back there to pick his stuff up. Turns out he was at hers and was being hell weird and just "out of it". She sat with him for a while but then went to bed, woke up to check on him and saw his phone, shirt and shoes there but no Son. She figured he had to have gone up to the roof as you can't get out of the apartment without a security card or something, but of course he wasn't there when she checked.

He's OK now and I asked him - he didn't have a sore arse at all.

But how lucky is he? He made it back, didn't lose anything, his feet are OK (went and got them X-rayed and no major damage there) and he ended up finishing the trip with a 3 day Drum and Bass festival in the mud in Prague. But what if it had worked out differently and it wasn't him that was spiked, but her? I know him and he would have gotten her home (assuming she could have directed him there) and stayed with her. But can you imagine when she "comes too" and this random stranger that she last remembered seeing at the night club is sitting in her place? That could have ended very badly indeed.

So yeah, stay safe on your travels peeps, and mind your drinks!

Yeah, he's all good now. On the plane home as I type. It was a difficult phone call to take from him when he was telling me the full story, but he did well to only call me after he was settled, rested and sorted out. As he was talking to me calmly at the time I just kept reminding myself that he was obviously OK as he was on the end of the phone, even as he laid out the horror story.

Happy to not receive another call like that in a hurry though.

That was my first thought after checking the bum. Kidney-nappers. But by the sounds of it the roofies were maybe meant for the girl and he got them instead?

Yep, think that's the case. There was a 50/50 shot the girl got spiked but he copped it instead.

But really I don't know. Why do people do what they do?

Kidneys all present too.
