Guys it’s not The Beach Boys. Brian Wilson is arguably our greatest songwriter, but the instrumentation for their albums was performed by a revolving cast of session musicians.

How about no. Only on Today, Summer Days and Pet Sounds (and Smile if it counts) and only because they were busy performing concerts around the globe. The other albums have only occasional supplements by session musicians or none at all. And they performed all that stuff live throughout their career anyway, with and without Brian.

This would be correct. White Rabbit is really good. The rest I just haven’t been able to ever get into.

Have you done "Bless Its Pointed Little Head" or "Live At Woodstock" in your thread yet? If not, you should probably get on that.

Just putting out in the world that we are now 20 years since the completion of the “experiment.” I have mentioned this show numerous times around here since I had hit up MSG on 7/8 & 7/9, then this show 7/11 and Hershey 7/12. Can’t believe it’s been so long since that run. Probably the most fun week I have had as a Pearl Jam fan.

I drove two hours to attend that Hershey show (which I loved, fuck the haters) - and funny enough I now live in Hershey entirely by chance and drive past that venue every day. It's funny how those things happen.

What difference does that make? It's a blanket statement. They have like 30 albums and some of them are just as good as those "big selling" ones. And they still performed everything on those albums live with no problems. I'm not trying to be a gatekeeper. It's simply not an accurate theory.

(And why would the sales of Smile need to be combined with Smiley Smile? The two albums have almost nothing to do with each other.)

I enjoy maybe 2 songs from Mudhoney. And maybe 3 Nirvana songs.
Also in that vein: Never cared for The Melvins, but they were fun to watch live, caught them opening for The Raconteurs.

I had Piece of Cake, Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, and My Brother the Cow and liked those albums but never obsessed over them. Overblown on Singles also great.

Most of the lesser known bands from that era are that way for a reason.

Now The Afghan Whigs were fucking great

Pearl Jam became my favorite of the bunch and obviously impacted my life in a huge way. But up until Kurt died Nirvana was #1. Their music still means the world to me and had they endured it's possible they would still be my favorite. The others all had great songs and at least one good to great album but never went far beyond that.

If it wasn’t clear, Alice In Chains. I love Jar of Flies, really like Dirt, like the self-titled and Facelift. Haven’t really heard the rest to be fair.

Nirvana - love all their studio albums, with Incesticide being one of the better b-side album dumps ever.

Soundgarden - love most of their albums. Badmotorfinger, Superunknown, Down on the Upside is a ridiculous run of amazing quality albums and their early stuff holds up very well.
