I wouldn’t say I hate the 80s. Tons of great music, though the bands I would generally run to had rough stretches in there.

What I didn’t like in the 80s was really the ridiculous hair metal that sits somewhere in the realm of Poison, Warrant, etc., and Bon Jovi is one of those bands I actively despise. That whole phase of rock music that was albums full of nonsense rock songs about girls with an obligatory one or two power ballads ruined the 80s credibility.

That said, R.E.M., U2, Sonic Youth, and a large host of other bands had great music in that decade. We’ve covered the great albums Neil Young released. Bruce had his greatest commercial success, Prince, Michael Jackson before things went south. Dylan had Infidels and those late decade albums. Tom Petty. The list is very long. And look - the 90s is also quite a mixed bag as well. But the 80s are still likely my least favorite of the decades of rock music from the 60s until now. That doesn’t mean it was bad by any stretch.

i like how one sentence is just "Tom Petty." and its an incredibly strong argument, just the guys name lol. 80s are by far my least favorite, but someone has to be last.

I could basically win most arguments with that.

There was nothing less cool than the 1970s in the 1980s except the 1980s in the 1990s.

That’s because if you do color association by decade, the 70s have a brownness to it - wood paneling, brown suits with floral shirts and big collars. The 80s were neon - neon workout gear with tall socks with those stripes. 70s had jorts while the 80s had those track suits (adidas). Cool 70s dudes had bushy beards and cool 80s dudes had white sports coats. It was a break with the past. The 90s grunge look is just the 70/s but the clothes were worn out by then.

Earlier Jorge mentioned gen-xers who where obsessed with 90s music as being the people most opposed to 80s music, but I have to say in my totally non-scientific, anecdotal experience, gen-xers are super into the 80s. It's Boomers that seemed to push back. But either way, I love that modern listeners and critical thought is giving the 80s it's due. Because there was so much to love. Just like most decades, there's stuff to hate, for sure. But there's so much great music. I mean, Jesus, Tom Waits had his best four album run in the 80s.

I thought maybe there would be a big 90s comeback, but it never really materialized the way the whole 80s retro thing did. The 90s didn't have as strong an aesthetic I guess. It was kind of a weird, transitionary time, what with the internet and all. You don't really have that strong decade identity anymore.

I won't go as far as trag. I still adore 90s music. The alt rock stuff, but especially the R&B and country of the 90s is fucking peak!

R&B was definitely good throughout. I prefer the new jack swing stuff like Tony! Toni! Toné! or Bell Biv Devoe to a lot of what came later.

I couldn’t fathom dying on the 90s hill. Rock music took a hard turn to suck around 95, and hip hop did a similar thing, albeit a couple years later. But by 97, FM radio was mostly garbage…I’d stomach so much Puff Daddy just to get one Timbaland song.

And a lot of the indie stuff that happened hasn’t aged as well for me. Like, were The Dismemberment Plan actually awesome? I don’t know.

And riot grrl, while an awesome ideological sub-genre, didn’t spawn a ton of music that I enjoy listening to today.

Mostly I cherry-pick things from the 90s and am content to never hear any of the other stuff ever again.

Except ‘97 was Radiohead’s OK Computer right? What year was New Adventures in HiFi? Yield? The late 90s was the explosion of really useless pop music, but there was plenty happening.
