Babylon. Eh it was ok, but really started to lose me as it dragged on. Three fucking hours to tell this bare bones, silly story?! I couldn't imagine sitting in a theater hearing Robbie screech at me for three hours. That scene with the sound guys was torture. The various minority characters seem added only to appease the modern diversity gods. All are wasted.

But I actually liked the overall coked out vibe of it. It looks very pretty and is well acted, and the critics are idiots for disliking it for the reasons that they did. It's all fake, tawdry bullshit, but it was interesting... but not for three hours!

I do agree that it dragged on too long and loses steam towards the end.

I think with that scene, they went to eleven about halfway through and didn't have anywhere left to go but to have the actors yell a lot. Could have been tighter. Basically my review for the whole movie.

Watched these during my flight just now:

Hypnotic - What a strange fucking movie. The premise is compelling enough and I liked how the main hypnotic baddie could unleash chaos so effortlessly to accomplish his goals, but then the movie takes a bunch of bizarre turns and ends with that hallmark of modern cinema: a scene of the lead characters standing around explaining the plot to each other. Pretty bad, a waste of a good idea, Robert Rodriguez is such a weird director.

A Good Person - As per usual, Florence Pugh is very good in what is kind of a waste of a movie. Morgan Freeman also acts alive for the first time in what feels like forever. But the problem is the writing. There are a lot of overwrought, overwritten scenes and the movie gestures vaguely at profundity without developing it. I dunno, it was just kind of boring.

Beau is Afraid - I definitely need to watch it again, because this is when I started to give in to exhaustion and I nodded out several times. My feelings are generally positive, I liked the vibes and how funny it was, as well as the funky lens play and how they used camera techniques to convey anxiety. This one merits a rewatch, but I was into it until I started falling asleep

there's a LOT to love about "TMNT: Mutant Mayhem"; there are a few changes to the original lore, which make sense for this generation of kids and kids media, and given what they can (and I hope they will) do to further things in future sequels; they've gone right back to the beginning, much like "The Batman" did recently -- so yes, left wanting more, but they've suggested more could be coming; I love how they gave New York a genuine sense of place that feels "real" even though it's animated, and I particularly liked how they wrote the crime culture: there are big "kingpins", and there are the small-time "crooks", real people who don't super want to be doing what they're doing but are exploited by the bosses and trapped by poverty and discrimination; in this way, the movie paints a world much like a teen-friendly Hell's Kitchen of Marvel's "Daredevil", which is SO appropriate, given that the original comic, its characters and its world-building, was a love letter to, and a parody of, Daredevil itself

also fuck the haters, love what they did with April, taking her back to her roots
