FWIW Brendan O'B's bass playing on I Got ID is some of the best bass playing on any Pearl Jam track.
Every time I hear what Jeff plays on it live, it just sounds wrong.
mike's guitar solos are also inferior... he sounds like a kindergartener vs. what Neil laid down in the studio

Mike's great, but I think I Got Shit is the best guitar solo in the pearl jam catalog.

Jeff had no idea recording No Code started and that turned into a great album. Perhaps this is the effort to rekindle that magic…

I wonder if it's ever gotten so bad, Jeff had to reach out to Boom for updates

and then Boom had to awkwardly pretend they were all not in the studio recording without him

The buzz noise on Sometimes takes me out of the song every time I listen on headphones. Is that a sound from Ed’s guitar that couldn’t be removed?

No one can replicate the tone of Old Black though, so Mike's mistake is trying to play the same kind of solo as Neil. He should do his own thing. Agree that Neil's solo on I Got Shit is utterly amazing. Spine tingles every time I hear it.

there was that brief period.. maybe in 96-98.. where mike actually played solos instead the basic pattern he's played for the last 25 years

Stone should take that solo. He does a better Neil impression than Mike.

counterpoint: "objective support mechanisms" haven't given us the best music lately; Gigaton was as good as it was (if you believe it was good, and I do) because the other Josh had a particularly Pearl Jam vision

??? Josh was effectively an objective support mechanism. I doubt he steered a single note of that record, and instead did a solid job of capturing good performances from the band.

His solo in even flow from the show I saw in Italy in 2018 was a whoa moment live for me.

Same with DOTC from last year in Brussels.
So yeah I don’t agree

Mike's still unbelievable and is one of the main reasons (for me) why they'll always be a draw to see live. But no one can successfully imitate Neil's solos.

agree that Stone should take the Neil solo in I Got Shit (live)

also believe that Stone should take more solos in general

maybe I'm more cynical than you about what unsteered Pearl Jam seems to want these days

I think there’s a divide between what Ed wants and what the band wants. Assuming that’s true, I think Josh did a great job of allowing a good amount of space for compelling contributions from the band.

That doesn’t have to be very hands on; it can be as simple as “hey this riff that stone introduced is interesting, let’s spend a couple hours exploring it while I press record and watch the levels.” Which is kind of my platonic ideal between the Albini “pretend I’m not even here” approach and a very hands on “here’s my production signature” approach.
