Man it’s just the way they portrayed the magic tricks that really ticks me off the most. You got to at least hint at these tricks being only illusions. In this way alone the movie the prestige is so much better it’s no wonder it is remembered and this movie is not

It’s good in The Prestige as well, but with magic tricks less explanation is better.

I learnt a card trick at an early age. Tricked everyone with it. My brother who is 9 years older than me, and probably 20-22 at the time, more or less demanded an explanation. After I told him, not only was he no longer impressed, he thought it was lame and a poor trick.

In the prestige it’s actually possible to pull off, based on the movies presented logic. Not in the illusionist

There are plenty of explanations online on how they are possible. I’m no expert on magic, and even if the movie showed «real» magic, it wouldn’t bother me.

According to Wikipedia The Illusionist was a commercial and critical success.

Plenty of examples of that in this thread.

Maudie

Never seen it before. 2016 movie, but I felt like seeing it today (and added it recently, after I did 2016).

Just started.

Really good true story this. Unique mood, and an excellent performance by Sally Hawkins.

Brawl in Cell Block 99

Loved this the first time I saw it. Hopefully a similar experience on the second viewing tonight.

It’s among 40 movies from 2010 - 2023 that I’ve rated 4.5 stars (and none higher), and a candidate for my top movie of 2017. I love it.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. After looking closer at it, four of those are miniseries of a sort, so it’s 36 movies. But Ruddo is correct.

Guardians Of The Galaxy 2

I guess we’ll see Thor Ragnarok as well, perhaps later this evening. Ended up with Victoria & Abdul, but we’ll get to TR eventually.
