The medium was physical media, and physical media was always developing new formats you could resell in. A television appearance on the right program could be a cultural event that almost everyone was exposed to. And the pop music explosion sucked the interest clean out of any of the music that came before it. The field was as wide open as it gets, and the audience was continually spending.

Nothing that came after it will have the shelf life that it had. And I fully expect to live long enough to see a time when almost no one under the age of 50 gives two shits about the Beatles, or the Stones, or The Clash, or any of that, either. It was fascinates me the way we aggrandize the longevity of these things that happened in less than a lifetime ago.

I do agree that it seems eveyrthing is quicker, the pace is fast, now everyone releases singles or short albums and they need to release something again soon in order to still be relevant for the market.
