Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Bottoms is so great. I loved it. Had such a great time. There is a little inconsistency of tone but it's a very small issue.

I'm firing up a movie called Downhill Racer (1969)

I've never heard of it, but it's Gene Hackman and Robert Redford, so fuck it - it's gotta be good

I get up for movies like this (I’ve also never heard of it). Then I remember that if it was any good I probably would’ve heard about it hundreds of times by now and it usually plays out that way. Good luck though, let us know.

It was good. A little light on story/tension, but the skiing looked great and Redford and Hackman delivered great performances. It was a very pleasant watch.

Excellent Nowegian movie, and a top ten movie from 2017 in my mind. Will see it for a second time this evening (first time in 2018).

Directed by Iram Haq, she is also Pakistani-Norwegian, and grew up in Oslo.

It was not bad! It was also not great, necessarily. It's definitely similar to the Card Counter, but I can see why it didn't make nearly as much of a dent in the zeitgeist as that one. If the Card Counter's greatest flaw is a pandemic-era amateur-ness, it did at least go to some weird and wild places. First Reformed, too, for sure. This newest one (and don't get me wrong it is not a straight-forward movie and definitely makes some weird choices) doesn't do that, exactly. But it's definitely in conversation with those two movies.

I'm far from the first person to notice this, but there is a lot of journal writing voiceover in Paul Schrader movies. It works to great effect in Taxi Driver, because we quickly realize that what we are hearing is basically the manifesto of a man who is about to do something bad. And manifestos are fascinating not just because of the crime. There's an element of capturing something other people are afraid of and being willing to articulate it that is impressive and terrifying. Valerie Solanas, Ted Kaczynski, Elliot Rodger. All three maniacs, even still all three admired by certain people entirely because of their manifestos. Just an example, not sure where I'm going with this.

Trag, I'd recommend The Card Counter. It stuck in my mind for a while after seeing it, and some images will never go away. Pretty great performance from Oscar Isaac. Kind of a bad one from Tiffany Haddish and some incorrect card stuff bring the movie down a couple pegs for me.

I finally saw The Flash last night because it's now streaming on Max.

It was ok. Some funny parts. I didn't mind The Back to the Future talk and stuff. I liked all the Batmans, Supermans, etc. too. Still don't understand how/why Zod came back....

Everything happens at a different timeline where Zod is appearing for the first time. Not sure if you really got the movie at all.
