The way people were describing infallible made me think it was gonna be a lot weirder. Pendulum too, actually. There were a few ' oooooh experimental pearl jam ooooooh' reviews.

For me, Infallible and Pendulum carries this album. For me, it would be a "good" album, but this two songs got me with a "wow" effect, that they simply stand out on the whole, showing "Hey fuckers, we are the boss arround here".

Interestingly enough, a lot of the recent crop of reviews were nailing those two songs as places where the album kinda lost its way.

Pendulum will do nothing for you if you aren't into Ed's voice but this isn't something you'll ever see posted on this board.

Yeah, I think one or two reviews said something like not much going on, just a moody atmosphere and Ed's voice. A bit boring. To which I thought "RM is going to love it."

Makes me want to disregard those reviews completely, but opinions are opinions. It's like they listened to album with the expectation that it was going to be all in the vein of MYM. I'm glad we didn't get that kind of album, it would have been too one-dimensional. It appears they weren't willing to invest time in listening to the more demanding songs or let them reveal themselves completely before making up their minds. Either that or they just have really shitty taste

Plus, the line from one of the consequence of sound reviewers where he said Infallible reminded him of something that he didn't like totally invalidated that review for me. I never understand that line of reasoning when reviewing an album.

Yeah. I expected Pendulum to have a weird rhythm. I should know that when most people say "weird rhythm", they usually mean really cool but otherwise perfectly standard rhythm. I don't think I ever registered the reviews for Infallible but I did pick up vibes that it wasn't going to be like the soundcheck leak. Especially when people started mentioning keyboards. I think I imagined it quite accurately after that point.

I think both are hugely successful experiments. It doesn't have to be 'weird' to be termed experimental.

yeah, I think both of those songs can clearly be said to be something new for the band. Every other song on here has roots in the established catalog.


The reviews for Lbolt are pretty good, but not great (with a few exceptions). The text often seems to be stronger than the number. It's looking like Backspacer will review higher, which says a lot about what people are looking for out of pearl jam.


Also, Sirens and Future Days tend to do quite well in the reviews.

I don't know how RM's reaction to the record stacks up to the main board, but it certainly seems once again that (assuming the pit and RM are aligned) that what the world wants from pearl jam and what we want from pearl jam may be too very different things.

I love Backspacer but I think LB is definitely superior. It's not so much a question of what the world wants from Pearl Jam, it's more what the world has time for from Pearl Jam. Backspacer was an immediately likeable record and wasn't too demanding. LB has some more things going on and they may not reveal themselves upon first listen. The rest of the world doesn't seem to care enough about the band to give those songs a chance. I'm generalizing here because some of the reviews have mentioned these same songs in a glowing light. Even RM is not unanimous in it's reception to said songs.

The metacritic score for LB is pretty much similar to BS at this point. It could go either way.

As usual, I don't think the press will ultimately decide whether this is a good album or not. There are too many ulterior motives: they will say everything is typical grunge drudgery, or that this is a return to form for the grunge veterans.

The world isn't this unified thing with a clear, definite opinion of Pearl Jam. And it sure is bigger and more diversified than the mind of a couple dozens journalists.

yeah, there is a lot of hate on this board for the one playing the piano, though it has a lot more to it then just his piano playing on that song
