Marshall

Good court drama with Chadwick Boseman. He does a terrific job as a young Thurgood Marshall, and has nice chemistry with Josh Gad. Needed something to take it to the next level. It’s good, but if you’ve seen some courtroom dramas (film & tv), you might feel you’ve seen most of this before.

Breathe

Another true story, starring Andrew Garfield and Claire Foy. It’s slow, and no one really impresses, with some hammy romance, even if Garfield has a challenging role, as a paralysed man. Andy Serkis made his directorial debut.

The Shape Of Water

Big Oscar movie, with 13 nominations. Beautifully made. I know opinions are split on this one, and it’s likely someone will comment that its awful in some way. I actually enjoyed it a little more this second time than the first one. Think my expectations were too high going in originally, waited all week, watched it during Taco Friday. Could really relax and enjoy it today, no pressure. Sally Hawkins was wonderful.

Have now got 24 movies left from 2017, 20 I’ve not seen before, and 4 rewatches (Wind River, Call Me By Your Name, Good Time and I, Tonya).

The Shape of Water is one of those movies I need to re-visit because in my memory I loved it but I also know that is colored by the circumstances around when I went to see it.

I saw it in the theatre with my girlfriend at the time. But she was like really annoyed with me going into the cinema. If memory serves, it was because the only idea I ever came up with to hangout together was to go to the movies. Which is probably a correct memory, because, yes, kind of all I want to do is go to the movies. I am boring, sorry.

But then it was even worse because it was in Montreal and the theatre I took her to puts French subtitles on English language movies, which is basically hellish to a bilingual person (her first language was French).

But! She liked the movie so much that she was in a really good mood at the end and apologized for being annoyed with me and not wanting to go to the movies and gave me a big hug.

That's my enduring memory of The Shape of Water.

Midnight in Paris

What a pleasure to watch. I love this movie.

Saw The Foreigner. It was a decent action flick with Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan. Has an IRA and a vigilante revenge plot. Don’t overthink it.

Loved Wind River when I saw it in the cinema in 2017. Upon rewatching it, I started thinking about the leads being white (a sign of the times I guess).

Found an excellent article on it:

«Wind River, a 2017 crime thriller set in the winter wilderness of the Wind River Indian Reservation, focuses on the on-going epidemic of assaulted and missing Native women and girls. Examples of the problem are not hard to find. The film received widespread positive reviews. Indian Country Today Media Network (ICTMN) called it “gripping, realistic and beautifully-crafted”. They praised the film for its use of at least 10 Natives as cast and crew, including Graham Greene, Gil Birmingham, and Tantoo Cardinal. The film touched on several Native issues, including interracial marriage, cultural differences, loss of cultural heritage, economic impoverishment, drug addiction, tribal government funding, resource extraction on BLM-leased land, and tribal sovereignty and jurisdiction. ICTMN described it as “the most realistic and respectful portrayal on film of the relationships between Native people and others outside ‘the rez.’»

I get this, and Renner’s would have been better played by a Native American. Still think the movie is excellent. Probably a top ten movie from 2017. I also think it helps raise awareness on the terrible problem of the «epidemic of assaulted and missing Native women».

It's also funny that the native American women in almost every Hollywood movie turns out not to be (as is the case with Wind River).

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.
