I find Argo’s issue with the third act focus on Strauss really odd, because for me it seemed like the perfect way to illustrate that while Oppenheimer was quite egotistical earlier in his career, and more so when he’s in full control of Los Alamos, he was never what I would consider a careerist; and by the end he’s rendered basically impotent by the ego of Strauss’s purely careerist goals. For two men concerned with legacy, only Strauss puts his regard by the political elite at the center of that legacy, while Oppenheimer is more concerned with the legacy of his actions, and the subsequent actions that will follow his work as the US enters the arms race. The line “maybe they were talking about something more important” sums that contrast up really nicely, and anyway it’s impactful watching Oppenheimer move like a raw nerve for two hours through history-making events, only to be glued to a chair in a tiny room in the final stretch.

I do agree with Argo that his wife’s role is given a disproportionate amount of emotional heft relative to Blunt’s screen time. I think another 10 minutes or so of fleshing her out could have added a richer dimension to the story.

I’ve been pretty vocal in my disdain of the general overuse of manipulative score, and have specifically echoed the popular sentiment that Nolan’s audio mixing is a frequent issue, but I thought this sounded amazing, top to bottom. So much drama in the dynamics of the sound.

I don’t see the acting of RDJ that epilogue does, but I get where he’s coming from and appreciate the comparison to me with music. But I found Rami Malek’s casting to be clunky, because even I can see him working in this. Damon did better but it’s Matt Damon and it’s hard to forget that; ditto Casey Affleck.

I also said to my wife that it reminded me a lot of JFK, so I was glad to see that comment from VG.

I don’t get why people are upset about the sex scene. Of course Oppenheimer didn’t read the Bhagavad Vita while banging, but so what, this is a big movie and that was a fun way to foreshadow the dark nature of their attraction to each other.

I’m sure I can find other things to nitpick or argue about but why bother. My knowledge of Oppenheimer prior to this was very general (brilliant physicist, pioneered the Manhattan Project, almost immediately regretted it, his descendants are wealthy). This gave me a ton of personal background on the man, illustrated his use of quantum physics in a way I could understand, made good use of dialogue and plotting to place it all within proper historical context, and threw so much fun and compelling movie making at me that I’d have to be an asshole to say “not good enough.”

Outstanding movie. I’ll be surprised if it doesn’t win for actor, director, editor, screenplay, sound design, and mixing.
Just saw the movie and loved it and I agree with pretty much all of this.

I didn't find it too loud and/or unintelligible, either, and I'm normally the first to complain about that. I also saw it on a regular non-IMAX screen, so maybe they really crank that shit for the IMAX.

Finally saw this in 70mm. Seems damn near every one that was in a previous Nolan movie showed up here.

One thing I thought I saw; was Pugh's character murdered or did she off herself as Opi was meant to believe? I believe I saw a hand on her head whilst underwater.
