"He pushed me in a direction for this latest album that we've done with him, that we're still doing, to do more leads," added McCready. "I'm doing leads on almost every song. And that hasn't been the case with Pearl Jam for a long time. If anything there's been songs [where's it's been], 'Don't put a lead on it' and sometimes I go, 'Well f*** I want to do a lead', it's sad. And sometimes it makes sense to not have one but it's kind of what I'm the best at. So I missed it for a few years, and a lot of records
"So Andrew went completely crazy and said, 'You're putting a lead of every single song' and some of them have two," McCready revealed to MusicRadar. "And that's what's happened and it's been really fun to do that again because it's given me the freedom to express myself where I haven't been for the last couple of records."
"He kind of kicked our asses," he admitted. "He kicked us to record quickly, got Matt Cameron to play more like he did in Soundgarden, in my mind. Matt Cameron's pushing this thing and it makes it sound more powerful than anything we've done in a long time.

yes more mike solos is unquestionably a good sign

i doubt he is being called upon to do the same 2-second spritzy rocker solo every song

Wotblatt can't be that stupid

if this album sounds like Ten-meets-Vs. then we just better hope no one in the band dies before they get to tour on it once

But how about another Ten/Vs with Matt Cameron playing like he did in Soundgarden

I'll pass. Give me an album of inspired new stuff like DoTC over a Ten/Vs. retread from a bunch of 59 year olds.

Ok but what about Ten/Vs with Mike leads, Matt drumming like Soundgarden and churchy Boom jamz!?

As long as Mike McCready also does lead vocals

That could technically qualify as "inspired new stuff"

Interesting how Mike said he's "sad" about not being able to rip solos on the last few records...And how there's sort of a slow, low-key drip of comments over the last few years that indicates they recognize they've been resting on their laurels.

How long until one of them just says flat out "Lightning Bolt sucked"?

They all need to unleash what they're best at but at the same time make it sound fresh.

Stone writes awesome guitar riffs. Mike rips and can make you weep. Jeff ament thunderous bass and unique songs, Cameron pounds, Ed sings about surfing.

Just go do it.

they've done all the 'new sounds' stuff

time for a true return to form

a true return to basics

large stone riffs, lengthy mike solos, pounding drums, jeff slapping the bass with force

no more mousey stuff topped with Ed micro machines salad

true return to form

agree this is sad for mike but was apparent to many of us: how few guitar solos were present on every new album

to think that this band even wrote ten or vs

albums heavy with guitar soloing

THE VERY THING THAT ATTRACTED MANY OF US TO THIS BAND AT ALL

and now it's just strayed into odd-lot demos recorded in isolation in their bedrooms pieced together by some weirdo

i applaud Wottenstein's approach

nothing could possibly disappoint

Remember when they were pumping up Riot Act as some of the best stuff Mike has played and he got like 3 solos over 15 songs?
