I'm not necessarily saying it's blanketly tasteful. I can see why you say he sounds like a pair of ape fists, honestly. I didn't like Boom's playing on the video of Sirens, and find (what I think is) BoB's playing much more sensitive on the album. All I mean is that the only thing I'm certain is BoB is that damned bookend keyboard on Future Days. That fucking thing keeps this album from being very good and makes it just, well, "good". And I wouldn't mind, but my enjoyment of so many of these songs makes the clunker on the final song feel even worse. I don't dislike any of the keyboard on this apart from that absolute trainwreck on the last song. I don't know why anyone, in their right mind, would decide that was a good idea. The fact that Ed *agreed* to it makes it worse still.theplatypus wrote:It's so weird to me that you prefer Boom's playing and call it "tasteful". Dude almost always sounds like he's playing with his elbows.harmless wrote:So apparently Boom played keyboard on the album as well.
I'm guessing he plays in the tasteful parts.

So LB doesn't appear to be performing so well in the "reviews" department, eh? I just don't get it.
I'm totally perplexed by all the "mixed" reviews
Didn't these idiots gush over Backspacer?
To hell with 'em all. It's fuckin' great!

Also, give me any of Boom's playing on fucking Riot Act, instead of this shit.

The CD arrived from Amazon this morning. Still waiting on the 10c edition, but I'm stoked that the normal releases are in book form instead of digipak.
The official thing sounds fantastic through headphones and further confirms that Jeff is the MVP of this album. Nice that Ed wrote the lyrics for every song too, as he's done a great job of connecting themes throughout the record.
So many great moments on each song, even better now that I can read along with the liner notes.

Infallible is a pure Binaural song, but with so many extra great qualities that lifts it up above some Binaural tracks.
Pendulum is KILLING me through the headphones.
I think it was stip who said it, it feels like the album is filled with ghosts in the way that certain harmonies appear in songs. Like someone is haunting the songs.

Well said.
I have no reluctance in saying this as good if not better than anything since and including Yield.

As soon as I heard the full album for the first time through headphones, it was no problem for me to say this is the best thing they've done since Binaural.dimejinky99 wrote:Well said.

I have a soft spot for Riot Act, because I discovered the band shortly before RA was released in 2002 so it holds a special nostalgic place in my heart.
But THIS album, good lord it's good. They have a new bona fide classic show opener in Pendulum which sets the mood just as well as Release/Long Road. I don't dislike a single song yet. My Father's Son is my least favourite, and even that I find funky.

This album has surpassed expectations. That's all I was really looking for. I'm trying not to over react but it is pretty great.

Re: Lightning Bolt: The Official Album Thread
My fear is that PJ sees the mixed/lukewarm (almost No Code-esque) response to LB from the media and think "Oh well, I guess that's not what people really want from us. Let's go back to the Backspacer vibe. That got us a lot of rave reviews, a billboard top spot, and a big hit single!" Cringe cringe cringe
PJ - if you're out there - hear the message loud and clear. "Yes yes please please more of this... keep chasing that rabbit down this hole!"

We should all be very aware of getting caught in the internet / group think idea of 'nothing can top Ten through Binaural'.
This is easily up there with them.

I find it difficult to believe they would make Backspacer again if it weren't a deliberate effort to regress.

ST was the regression record.
They won't get fooled again.
