What movies are you watching?

Columbus

"A Korean-born man finds himself stuck in Columbus, Indiana, where his architect father is in a coma. The man meets a young woman who wants to stay in Columbus with her mother, a recovering addict, instead of pursuing her own dreams."

With everything I've seen from 2017, and so close to the end, there were two movies I hadn't seen that stuck out to me. Columbus and A Ghost Story. Found a stream of Columbus today, so now I'm watching it. It's slow, but in a beautiful way. No stress. The camera work is gentle and shows off Columbus in a nice way. This somehow feels more real than most movies. Still an hour to go.

Found A Ghost Story as well, and starting on that now. While I know there are still plenty of 2017 movies left that I've never seen, I feel like after this and the other three I plan to see this week, that I've seen all the movies I wanted to see the most, and a larger number in total than for any other year. Was a good year for movies.

Difficult movie to rate and rank. It can be profound, but also rather boring. I was hoping for something more at times, and didn't love the ending. But I appreciate what they were trying to do, and it was certainly original.

Read a few other reviews, and people seem to either love or hate it. Critics are mostly positive, with some saying it is among the best of the decade.

It certainly made me think. In an eventful day, I’m still thinking of it. Overall I liked it, but it won’t be in my top ten for the year.

I tried to watch Showing Up last night but was really put off by how grainy the image was. It didn't make it look like film so much as just introduce a lot of digital noise into the picture and make the whole thing look a bit too out of focus. I couldn't get over it in the moment so I turned it off after about ten minutes. I will try to reconcile myself to this aesthetic today and try again tonight.

Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

They would send them out to Navy boats in the middle of the night, trying to avoid Sudanese militia. Chris Evans is the lead in this movie.

I really liked it. You should definitely give it another go, especially if you liked any of her other films.

I know what you mean about the graininess, but I didn't find it too egregious.

Stronger

Second last 2017 movie (and hoping to see The Florida Project later this evening).

Jake Gyllenhaal is a marvellous actor, and he’s been terrific in the first half hour here.
