When Dave was fired one of the reasons given by Jeff was that Dave couldn’t emulate the feel of the Buzzcocks.

was there actually a quote from someone that 'Matt plays like with Soundgarden' on this or is this reference an interpretation of Watt's comment that he 'asked Matt to bring his drum kit'

Won’t be much fun if the drums still sound like he’s thumping a cardboard box.

I liked when they worked on each others demos, but didn’t save the awkward quirky songs for solo projects, that’s how we got Pilate, cropduster, rival etc..

I’m dreading this is gonna be avocado 2: time 2 rock like foo fighters again.. but much worse because it’s not time to rock at all. I didn’t like the sound of iggy pops “ every loser”album, and between that and earthlings, that’s what I imagine that might be somewhat of a template for how andrew watt would mix a rock record. Hopefully I’m completely wrong..

The bigger the production the more EV has to strain and enunciate weirdly to match the loud mix. This is why I think riot act has aged well in comparison to later albums.

It would be cool if they just made a record in studio litho and used whatever engineers stone used for moonlander or whatever and tried to get a more natural sounding recording.

On the other hand their live shows seem to be pretty good lately and i thought I’d probably seen them enough times after the big day out shows in 2014, but maybe one more time ?

maybe it will be like Badmotorfinger where Matt does exceptional drum work in the studio but it comes out faint and pointy after post-prod

My prediction is that the 2024 album will sound more like Backspacer than anything else. Watt might want to channel classic PJ but PJ 2023 aren't those guys anymore. I get a sense he's trying to coax another SOLAT or an Animal out of them but I just don't see it. They don't have the rage anymore. So it'll be an album of Gonna See My Friend and Supersonics instead. Hope I'm wrong tho.

Things that make me feel hopeful about #12:

- coming in with no music. Hopefully that gives them the space to play off each other more instead of shoehorning pieces of songs into each other
- Watt appears to be inspiring them to try new things and has them excited about it
- I’m hopeful the the band individually and collectively are more self aware humans and can keep egos in check for the sake of experimenting, trying new things (not just sounds, processes to making their music too), and not feeling forced to make their music sound a certain way.

Things that don’t make me feel hopeful about #12:

- Watt trying to squeeze out ‘energy they had from the earlier years’ could turn out to be a terrible attempt at forcing a ‘return to form’ via production. I would rather they make music that feels authentic to them now, and even take creative risks, rather than try to ‘rock harder’ like they did 30 years ago.
- I’m not a fan of what I’ve heard of rock albums Watt’s produced, including Eddie’s solo album. I enjoyed the novelty of it when it first came out, but It hasn’t stuck and I rarely feel compelled to listen to it now

there is, undeniably, an energy to a concert that hasnt been translated to a studio record since vitalogy. I think that is his point, though ST was an effort to capture that w mixed results. But you CAN get that feeling as long as you arent using youth or anger as your guideposts

Then the question for me becomes why? Why is the goal to capture the live concert energy in a studio recording? Sure we CAN get that but why is that the goal? I personally think authenticity and creativity are better guideposts.

that feels to me like when they are at their most authentic. to be clear, capturing that energy and interplay doesnt mean writing songs you think will play live. that instinct has not always led to their best work

either approach can foster creativity. But spontaneity and collaboration and the fusion of voices is not necessarily what their ‘we all work on near complete songs’ approach necessarily excels at. and while pj is lucky to have a bunch of talented song writers, their biggest core strength is their interplay

There are a thousand different ways to capture energy than trying to write songs like you did in your youth - which nobody said that of the music.

The last few records have felt stiff. And that can happen in how you write songs, how you play your part, how you capture your part, and the choices one might make when adding to a song.

And for me, the guitar parts and lack of interesting approach to chord use - has been boring as hell compared to years past.
