But then Vs came
I heard Go on a music tv show.
Next day sent into town with money to buy schoolbooks for the new year and I ‘forgot’ to buy the German textbook and bought Vs on cassette. (Mine said Five Against One, also)

Never looked back. This was my band :)
yeah, similar to what happen to me in terms of not being very blown away with Ten and this being the first time i kinda become obsessed with the band.
Same.

Black is probably the only song on Ten that I come back to.
Sometimes Garden also.
But that's it.
And I'm a devout PJ head through and through.

And to think that I had bought the Vs CD by accident! I, a young boy, was sent to Tower Records to get Dad something by Pink Floyd. To my shame I misremembered the band name. I knew it started with a P. But what came after it? Very vague. Anyways, the place was crawling with posters and promo materials for an album by a band that did start with a P! It had a weird sheep on the cover, but judging how everyone seemed to treat it as THE NEXT BIG THING, obviously this must be what Dad was after, right?

So I bring it home and he takes a look at it and goes "wth is this shit? I said Pink Floyd! PINK FLOYD!"

So I ended up keeping it and I gave it a spin and the rest is history.

Did your Dad ever listen to it?

This was the first CD I ever bought with my own money. I happened to wander into the music store at the mall on its release day and there was that sheep photograph all over the display out front. I had no idea that they had a new album coming out, but I recognized the "pearl jam" on the cover and took a roll of the dice.

I knew Ten because my sister had a copy, and I liked it well enough, but as others have said it was fine but whatever. This was an entirely different thing -- it was heavier, grittier, and more eclectic, not to mention sonically superior to the first album. I just remember it being so weird to my 15-year-old ears, but in the best way imaginable. Daughter was, to my ears, the most jarring detour, but I absolutely loved it. Rearviewmirror was the first listen favourite and remains for me one of the best ever PJ tunes. I also remember Elderly Woman being immediately memorable, although it felt like less of a curveball by that point in the record. The stuff in the booklet really resonated as well -- growing up in Canada we got all our American TV through Detroit affiliates and I recognized the picture of the guy who had been beaten to death by the cops -- that had been all over the news. It reinforced a lot of truth about the world to a naive, small town Canadian kid. I've bought every Pearl Jam record since on its release day.

Anyway, happy birthday, Vs! Despite all of our disagreements around here, I feel like this record is probably one thing, broadly speaking, that we all agree on. :heartbeat:

Yeah, I also was one who liked Ten well enough but didn’t even own it when Vs. came out. I went to my friend’s party, who got this as a gift by her friend. They threw it in the tape deck during this party, and I just remember thinking that it all sounded so familiar, like I had heard it a thousand times, even though it was my first listen. Within a week I got my own copy and Ten for good measure and listened nonstop. Once the whole Atlanta ‘94 radio broadcast happened, that was the nail in the coffin to becoming a lifelong fan.

This would've been a fun thing to reissue. Missed RSD opportunity.
