Has any artist become your favorite later in life

Used to be PJ but its sad I'm over it. Almost everything about Eddie annoys me now I'm hoping at some point that will flip back. I listen to a lot of 70s R&B/Funk/Soul stuff which I thought was super stupid when I was younger. I was listening to the Isley Brothers yesterday. 20 year old me would have hated it. It’s good stuff though.

I think Pearl Jam’s liberalism/idealism has alienated a lot of fans as they become older and more conservative.

This reminds me of something my dad used to tell me 20 years ago:

If you’re young and you’re not a democrat, you don’t have a heart.

As you get older if you’re not a republican, you don’t have a brain.

Sometimes when I go on a Beatles binge, I think that they could overtake Pearl Jam as my favorite.

Yeah, I still in my mind always think "other than the Beatles, duh...." when I'm asked who my favorite band/artist is.

If I'm honest I think I avoid the Beatles in part because I know that if I listen it'll be like "Well of course it's good, it's the fucking Beatles, duh." And I don't want to put the Beatles in any sort of listing discussion.

There are many bands I've come to love later in life but none that I've thought about in terms of "favorite band" the same way I thought about Pearl Jam growing up. I think that "favorite band" concept is just tied up in a lot of intangibles that aren't part of how I listen to music as an adult.

Very well put, same for me as well. Looking back, the experiences and emotions were a big part of it.

After my Pearl Jam fandom peak, the only bands who generated excitement that approached PJ levels have been The National and Frightened Rabbit. In general I have broader music tastes now and have actually been more active in seeking out new bands than when I was younger.

Yeah, this runs more like a moving target of many favorite bands and artists that sort of float around day by day, in large part due to streaming and no longer really having to stand in the store with 2 albums wondering which one to buy.

"Favorite band" is sort of a strange concept the older I get. Well said, KD.

I guess the artists I tend to listen to the most, whose work I know better than other artists, tend to be artists I've found after the age of 18.

The Beatles (obviously I grew up with them but I didn't become "obsessed" and consume their entire catalog album by album until my 20s), The Decemberists, Tom Waits, Nina Simone, St. Vincent, Kendrick Lamar, The Chicks, Martin Sexton... all of those artists came relatively "later" for me -- if by "later in life" we mean post-adolescence or even post-college.

Tom Waits, Kendrick, Nina Simone, and St. Vincent are all post-30, for me. I would probably consider any of them my "favorite artist" on a given day.
