I can dig what you’re saying, Trag — I’d gladly take a Neil Young and Crazy Horse record of dull/average songs that really captures the essence of them jamming in a room, more than I’d want an album of “better” songs that has Watt-style production.

I can certainly think of many albums I enjoy that fall into the “good songs, bad production” group too, so I don’t think one set of circumstances is consistently preferable to the other, but what you’re saying makes good sense to me.

Ugh.

Neil's been reinterpreting his music for years. Even before the archives project he was ploughing out the live albums and to be fair, the definitive versions of his tracks are rarely the original studio versions.

Also interesting to see how many bands are now releasing these reinterpretation albums - Roger Waters and U2 most recently and Beck is working on one too.

I like it. I'd take a PJ album of them rearranging tracks from their catalogue.

It’s kinda hard to do a call and response in the studio. I guess they can do it like the big bands used to and have the band members be the response to Ed.

With that new Stones album Watt went again with Serban Ghenea for mixing. I don't like this guy for rock records... He also did Earthlings and the mix is the worst part of that album.

I still hope PJ are going for someone else on their Watt-produced record. Iggy and Ozzy were done by Alan Moulder who I would prefer over Serban Ghenea.

I've learned to manage my expectations with each PJ release, but I do hope this time around that Ed's vocal indulgences are curtailed - it's something I'm having a hard time getting over now. Stop filling every moment with vocals, let the music and room breathe.

Depends on the mixer, but it can range from "making the recorded performances sit comfortably in a stereo spread" -- meaning basically levels/compression, EQ, and panning -- to "completely sculpting the sound from the ground up," using things like effects and samples to craft something that goes far beyond what was recorded by the band within the studio.

I have yet to hear a Ghenea mix that suggests he's content to let a band just sound like a band.

It's everything done after recording and before mastering.

Levels, panning, reverb, effects, initial compression, etc...

Then it's sequenced and homogenized and mastered for the release format (digital, vinyl). But with Pearl Jam, there is little difference in that stage. They make a sausage and then slap it off whatever ass it applies to.
