Re: The Rolling Fuckin' Stones
Okay, I enjoyed this mostly on the first listen, and can’t wait to listen more, but initial thoughts are that this might be the best album of largely originals since Tattoo You, which is now 42 years ago - damn.
Angry - I like this after a few listens, but this is one where grit would have trumped polish
Get Close - mid tempo frankly more reminiscent of newer stuff post 1990.
Depending on You - same
Bite My Head Off - best Stones song in a really long time! McCartney’s bass solo is perfection and brings some heat on an already hot track.
Whole Wide World - good newer style song that has moments that sort of harken back to Tattoo You, but still too much polish.
Dreamy Skies - wonderful country inflected song that balances songcraft without going full Far Away Eyes.
Mess It Up > Live By the Sword - two big highlights of this album. Charlie Watts presence is definitely felt. Elton does a nice job of contributing without taking over - I felt the guest appearances were too overstated on Earthling, and here Andrew Watt or the Stones or whomever get it just right - and that is throughout the album.
Driving Me Too Hard > Tell It to Me Straight - liked both of these. Always enjoy Keef taking the vocals on the latter. These are songs the Stones just do well.
Sweet Sounds of Heaven - this is a big highlight, reminds me a bit of You Can’t Always Get What You Want in its grandeur. Lady Gaga fits in so nicely here.
Rolling Stone Blues - full circle closing to this album. In a way, as appropriate and fitting as Eddie’s closing of Earthlings.

Contrary to expectations, I'm enjoying this quite a bit too. I really don't care for Watt's production, but Mick sounds great and the tunes are solid. I think "Dreamy Skies" is my favorite.

This is actually quite wonderful? Depending on you is great....that chorus.
All the instruments are just kind of screaming at me so yea, I dont care for Watt's production but at the same time everything sounds great? It lacks space and doesnt sound like a band in the same room but ultimately i think the keys, slide guitars, vocals, bass, gutiars all sound great individually?

The coolness of Mick Jagger - had even Bruce Springsteen called out Paul McCartney to play a solo in a studio album, all we’d be talking about is how hammy it is. Mick does it and we’re like “yeah!”Strat wrote:Lol Why you bite my head off is so fucking good.
Also, in what outrageous world does Mick Jagger tell Paul McCartney to have at it with a solo?! That would almost be like Kurt Cobain yelling “sing it, brother!” at Eddie Vedder on a Nirvana studio track. Crazy.

There's a couple moments on this album where it feels like "holy shit this is the stones who kind of do this better than anyone ever could"liebzz wrote:The coolness of Mick Jagger - had even Bruce Springsteen called out Paul McCartney to play a solo in a studio album, all we’d be talking about is how hammy it is. Re: The Rolling Fuckin' Stones
Keith was hysterical on Jimmy Fallon last night.
Playing his guitar with open G tuning wtf but so good
My mom asked me today if I liked the new stones song
Me : I didn't hear it
What is this world coming to

Loving Depending On You. I know it sounds too much like a hit or something, but once i get past that, i really like the melody and chorus.
And Mess It Up is wonderful, the new Miss You. Thats Charlie in drums right? gotta be.

Indeed it is Charlie Watts. I agree with both of those.VinylGuy wrote:Loving Depending On You. I know it sounds too much like a hit or something, but once i get past that, i really like the melody and chorus.

Living in a Ghost Town was a good first clue. This is much different than that, but still very enjoyable.Monkey_Driven wrote:I like this quite a bit. Can't believe they still have it.

‘Whole Wide World’ verses remind me so much of Pearl Jam’s ‘Evil Little Goat’ and I can’t unhear it.
