you earn badges throughout the game. you equip one badge before the start of each level. each badge grants a special ability or minor alteration to the level (such as extra blocks)
ooh I haven't gotten the extra blocks yet. We only played maybe 6 or 7 levels last night. We unlocked the "jump up off the wall" badge and the parachute badge.

Some of the badges have downright made me giddy

Super Mario 3D World? Yes, you should play that. It is fantastic.
maybe he shouldn't. doesn't sound like much of a mario fan. Wonder is better and he's not very impressed by it
I called it charming and fun. My only negative was that most of it isn’t very challenging. There are a lot of low level difficulty (even by their own ranking system) stages. Some of the wonder sections are super fun, and I like Spider-Man vine badge (it’s like Link’s hookshot!) a lot. So I’m enjoying it, but I doubt I’ll spend more than 20 hours with it. I must have at least quadrupled that with Odyssey. It’s just a preference in style.

That's understandable. But I'm finding it adequately challenging for a Mario game. Some levels are quite difficult, especially if you're trying for 100%.

Anyone finish?

I’ve gotten to sneak in a few minutes this week and I’m onto Bowser’s world - I think maybe one stage away from the final fight. I’ve discovered both special worlds but will save them for later. I plan to finish Bowser off this weekend. I’ve definitely died more in the later stages, but I still have double digit lives without having bought any, and I’m not great.

One minor gripe: I wish it was clear when you had to fall down a hole to find a hidden part of the stage. Sometimes you do, and sometimes you think you do and you just die. That’s dumb.

This has been fun, though. I really like the flower voice.

Both my kids would rather have the latest Kirby side scroll game over this Mario side scroll game.

Yeah, I beat the game. Haven't 100%'d it yet, though. Maybe by the end of next week.

By this, do you mean all the wonder seeds, purple 10 coins, and “wonderful” flag pole toppers?

Well, I finished Bowser off yesterday on my first try. Today I finished the special world and got all of the wonder seeds. Some of those special stages were crazy. The Jump! Jump! Jump! Stage took me 100 tries. I was losing my mind. My wife was not impressed. You get nothing but a 2 second pat on the back for finishing the special world, unfortunately.

I imagine there could be a ton of replay value with friends or online, but I won’t do any of that. For all intents and purposes, I’m done with this game. It was cute.

It's probably too early to say it, but this is my second favorite 2D Mario art style.

Mario 3 will always be the GOAT, the perfect marriage of hardware limitations and creativity.

Maybe with a large spoon of nostalgia.

What was your total playtime, Daft? I'm not at a stage in my life right now where I can beat a game (even a 10-15 hour one) in one week, but I'm curious.
