Watched Prom Night - middling slasher saved by a very good cast, especially Jamie Lee Curtis and Leslie Neilson in what must have been one of his last big straight performances. You can pick out which other movie each specific scene is trying to copy, mostly between Carrie, Halloween, and Saturday Night Fever, with a little Black Christmas thrown in. I do like the fact that the killer is this little relatively weak guy, which makes sense once the identity is revealed.

I love Prom Night, is full of style and swag. The dinamic between Jamie and Eddie Benton is great. Terror Train is another fun but derivative slasher staring Curtis.

Hoping Usher steps it up in the last two episodes because this has been a bit basic.

Well, shit. The last two episodes are the best by far but they suffer from the same overly long moralizing 'right think' lectures that grind the story to a halt and doomed Midnight Club. The reason this series ranks in bottom half for me is just wasn't scary. There were a couple jump scares, but it wasnt anything that will stay with me unlike Hill House, Bly Manor, and the superior Midnight Mass. Well, there was one sequence that was glorious:

No, it's when the desired opinion is telegraphed directly. Compare Kate Siegel's brilliant monologues on the nature of self forgiveness and acceptance in Midnight Mass to Carla Gugino's rants in Usher. The first is used to move the character through the story, to demonstrate how she experiences the world and how it influences her decisions. They help the audience discover how they themselves feel about the story. The later was used to instruct viewers what to think and remind them it is unacceptable to have sympathy for damaged rich people and pharma giants... over and over again.

tonight I did my annual Halloween rewatch of The Blair Witch Project, my favourite horror movie of all time; every time I watch it I notice something new to love, and I think Heather Donahue's performance is a masterclass in naturalistic acting; I couldn't wipe the grin off my face, it's art

I wrote this on FB last night while watching "When Evil Lurks"; my feelings about it haven't changed a day later

"When Evil Lurks" is the latest one being raved about so I've tried to watch it tonight

it seemed super promising for the first 20 minutes or so, it's got some spectacular gore practical effects (some which made me gasp, I'm not a gorehound) but it's much more interested in that -- and some weird garbage mysticism around autism -- than crafting a gripping story that maintains any dread or tension across its runtime; I've got 20 minutes until the end and no matter how cool and dark some of the setpieces are, I don't really care what happens to any of these characters or where the story will end up; I don't have to *like* characters or sympathise with them to follow them through a story, but I do have to find them interesting

I dont think it was a particularly good movie, the acting and the script suffers and is evident specially if you speak spanish or live in Latam, but the atmosphere (even though it borrows from A24) and the efectiveness and nastiness from the scary and gore scenes were really great, unusual for this ages. All I was thinking was, give this man the remake of The Thing, ala Fede Alvarez.
