A direct assault on NAM culture being of course unthinkable, SWPLs divert their contempt for gun rights from NAMs and towards white rustic bumpkins. To the extent that NAMs factor into the thoughts of said bumpkins, it's that in the bucolic places they call home, low population density means police manpower and response times are too low to be relied upon. Consequently, each man need be responsible for his own self defense.

Translation:

White liberals want to walk around their 'up and coming' city neighborhoods without encountering scary black people with guns. But they cannot say that publicly, so they say it's old racist Jesus loving white guy farmer Bob with his assault rifles that is the problem.

I can understand criticizing it if its interpreted as a indirect plea for more funding, but some local groups are interpreting him as calling for vigilante justice. If you go far enough along the gun control spectrum does it make sense to equate self defense with vigilante justice? It didn't sound as if he was telling everyone to go Bernhard Goetz on the neighborhood ruffians.
