"When Evil Lurks" is the latest one being raved about so I've tried to watch it tonight
it seemed super promising for the first 20 minutes or so, it's got some spectacular gore practical effects (some which made me gasp, I'm not a gorehound) but it's much more interested in that -- and some weird garbage mysticism around autism -- than crafting a gripping story that maintains any dread or tension across its runtime; I've got 20 minutes until the end and no matter how cool and dark some of the setpieces are, I don't really care what happens to any of these characters or where the story will end up; I don't have to *like* characters or sympathise with them to follow them through a story, but I do have to find them interesting

I dont think it was a particularly good movie, the acting and the script suffers and is evident specially if you speak spanish or live in Latam, but the atmosphere (even though it borrows from A24) and the efectiveness and nastiness from the scary and gore scenes were really great, unusual for this ages. All I was thinking was, give this man the remake of The Thing, ala Fede Alvarez.
see I thought it imitated folk horror atmosphere and tension a la A24 and should have had it in spades considering the setting, but I just felt nothing, mainly just annoyance at all the screaming and being told the same things over and over again, late reveals to the story that should've happened much earlier to keep the story moving (pace was fast but story was static); I kept checking the clock to see if I was near the end yet so I could watch something else, which is so weird considering the runtime was pretty much my sweet spot for a horror movie and it never slowed down like a movie like this should to bring the slow creeping dread
this was absolute fluff punctuated by some great setpieces, but proof that great setpieces don't make a good movie

So good. Lot of the visuals and direction in this felt weirdly dated? Like from mtv videos on the 90s or something? But the. A lot of it was gorgeously done too.
You were right, the last two were next level. Really brilliant. I didn’t find any of it tedious to be fair.
im waiting to see "When Evil Lurks" in two weeks in the cinema. I know a lot of folks involved with the movie, and loved Rugna's first movie too. I also won at Sitges, so its kind of a big deal.
I saw The Shining and Halloween at the theater this weekend. It was great to see them both on the big screen. Gremlins is on in a couple of weeks too. I'll definitely be going to that.

I love those two. Watching The Shining on the big screen is such a wonderful experience.
