I'm on my 32nd listen of this approximately, and I've gone down and up, hot and cold. Today, listening to it in the car on proper CD, I had a realization that is new to me and probably old-hat for others. I think stip alluded to it in his review, but what's so odd about this song is that, for a power ballad, 90% of the sentiment is coming from a place of fear. It's got all the key words of big cheese ("just to know we're safe," "grateful man," "I pull you close," "in the arms of another man", etc.) but in actuality all of those buzz words are being written/sung by a desperate dude who sits in bed at night anxious as fuck, waiting for the other shoe to drop. It's not until the very end of the song where "the fear goes away" and the song rises, something BOB properly reflects with the highlighting of the keyboards in this section. Then, the "ahh" "ohh" singing becomes like a mantra of release.

That's the best impression of stip I'll ever do. But I really did feel this on a grey morning into work. Ahh. Ohh.

I'm not sure BoB's keyboard in that "second chorus" does anything for the song, but otherwise I agree with you

Personally, love songs do not get me anymore. When I first heard, I said "well, good, nice song, little cheesy, but good".

But that's why Pearl Jam is different for us, that have constructed some meaning around the band, because after listening again and again, this song just caught me.

It is very beautiful and they haven't write a love song like this in a while.

I think the division lay mostly along the following lines....

Those who dislike with great disdain were the folks who became fans in the Vitalogy/No Code time frame.

Those who love, became fans during the Ten/Vs. era (but most likely the Ten era).

****Just a theory - I could be way off****

I loved Ten from the get go and love Sirens - but I love 90% of the entire catalogue. Even though I liked the immediate accessibility of Ten, Vitalogy was the first somewhat challenging record I can remember from my youth - and I began to appreciate the band in a whole new way.

So, I'm not so locked into either of PJ's split personalities... I enjoy them all equally.

I can enjoy Binaural or Riot Act as much as I can Ten, Vs., Vitalogy or Yield - and vice versa.
