I might be off on this, but check the run times on Watt produced albums in the past couple of years. It feels like they are always between 45-50 minutes.

It was their most uneven album when it arrived, but I agree on the production style and quality. Even the artwork and the name was superb. Just wish we could replace the worst 4-5 songs with some gold, and it could be an all time great.

It sounds great, but it's too long (11 songs would be a MUCH stronger record), and there are some weaker songs that coast by on how rich they feel.

I've settled into Ed's vocals over the years, especially as later albums made them more of a choice. They certainly fit the mood of the record well.

yeah me too, i even liked them for what they are but its clear the music sometimes is asking him a different approach. I remember him talking about REM Reveal if im not mistaken, about trying to get the album into a more uplifting mood and its clear its not. There are hints of that, with I Am Mine or Down, which eventually was out of the album for being too up

adding undone and down (and sequencing them later) definitely change the tone of the album a bit, depending on what you remove

REM went into automatic for the people planning on a loud album and ended up with a masterpiece - sometimes the intent and what you produce dont align
