There is a hog in me . . . a snout and a belly . . . a machinery for eating and grunting . . . a machinery for sleeping satisfied in the sun—I got this too from the wilderness and the wilderness will not let it go.

There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want . . . and the mockingbird warbles in the early forenoon before the dew is gone, warbles in the underbrush of my Chattanoogas of hope, gushes over the blue Ozark foothills of my wishes—And I got the eagle and the mockingbird from the wilderness.

O, I got a zoo, I got a menagerie, inside my ribs, under my bony head, under my red-valve heart—and I got something else: it is a man-child heart, a woman-child heart: it is a father and mother and lover: it came from God-Knows-Where: it is going to God-Knows-Where—For I am the keeper of the zoo: I say yes and no: I sing and kill and work: I am a pal of the world: I came from the wilderness.

She does love stickers.

I dunno, I’ve been trying to work out why I got so emotional reading about her development and thriving school life. I think maybe it was some delayed reaction or release related to Covid baby stuff. She did not have a normal first two years of her life, so to hear about the bonds she’s made with classmates and teachers just hit a little harder. She’s spent a huge amount of her life around just me, so to know I did something right and prepared her well for all this is a relief.

you never need to question something like that.

i've been thinking a lot lately how little time we have left with my kids being home (they're 15 and 13). it's crazy to think that we'll be empty nesters in 4 1/2 years. f that.

My daughter is 20 and mostly living at her boyfriend's family's place. She's here every Monday and Thursday though. My son is 23 and knows full well he has to be out for his 25th birthday.

Bring it.

My kids have been trying to get out of my house since day one. :haha: My daughter has come back twice now - and she hates coming back. It’s a pride thing. All of my kids are very proud and happy to tell me how they can pay for their own shit now.

I’ve given one of my sons extra money at Christmas because so far he has been the less needy of all of them. It’s not a favorites thing - just acknowledgement of his accomplishments in independence.

And if the other two give him shit about it - he can tell them how long I’ve carried their phone bills. :haha:

The only thing I ever ask my kids to do is to make sure they take care of each other after I’m dead and gone. (Also why he gets extra money because he may need to pay their phone bills. LMAO)

My daughter shall live with us forever so I can keep her as safe as possible.

Something tells me this view will change drastically over the next fifteen years.

Probably teenage years will be where most of the challenge comes in, just before they head off to school or work and into adulthood, the big scary world even though their brains are still squishy. During the teenager years you have an even shorter window of opportunity to parent.

I read a thing on child rearing more recently that speculated about whether you should give your kids more freedom or whether it’s better to restrict and shield them from the world. I think it’s healthy to not swing too wildly in one direction. Let it ebb and flow based on the situation. Give them freedom but also give them tough love. A good balance of both.

My good buddy has a now thirteen year old daughter. I’ve seen this in action, and yes, it terrifies me.
