LBC is such good cheese. When they kick into “hold me and make it the truth” it’s one of the best moments on the album.

No retrack. No b-sides.

You Are is a masterpiece.

Arc is as good as it gets. Top shelf Pearl Jam.

5 stars:

PJ have dipped their toes into some cheese over the last fifteen years or so, but I've never considered LBC cheesy whatsoever.

I can understand people not liking the title, although that never bothered me either.

“Love boat captain, take the reigns and steer us towards the clear, here.
It’s already been sung but it can’t be said enough, all you need is love.”

It’s the nice cheese you bring to your aunt’s house on Christmas Eve. Cambozola maybe. Delicious.

Given the subject matter of the song, it's perfect. :heartbeat:

I'd say Future Days, Sirens and Jusy Breathe are the only pure cheese songs in their catalogue.

is cheese just sentimentality you arent moved by? those are all songs seemingly about Ed’s family but open hearted longing and protectiveness is in their DNA

This is a really good question.

One of the main reasons I (and many others) gravitated to Pearl Jam is the authenticity in Ed's lyrics. I mean, it doesn't get any more sentimental than Black, but hearing that song at the height of the power ballad hair metal era, it landed differently than those types of songs because it felt intensely personal and relatable.

For whatever reason, songs like Sirens and Future Days feel like they veer a bit into the saccharine, although I can't put my finger on exactly what it is. I'm sure EV means what he's singing just as much as he did with Black, but there's a poppy corniness to my ears that wasn't there years ago -- those tunes feel like Desmond Child or Diane Warren could have co-written them, and Pearl Jam never felt like that to me once upon a time.

The other culprit for me, cheese-wise, is the rock songs that feel a little too poppy and throwaway, lyrically-speaking -- Supersonic, Infallible, and LTRP would be three of the worst offenders for me. I guess there's a lack of gravitas that at one time was never absent in their songwriting.

Just Breathe does not belong with those other two. It has *immensely cheesy* production but it's guitar progression, singing and lyrics are beautiful and if not vintage Pearl Jam at least very high quality EV.

(FWIW I love the poetry of Sirens, and generally view its problems as partially production as well- it feels like it was Frankenstein-stitched together)

Sirens problem is that the music doesn’t match the lyrics to me. Sirens musically to me always sounded like it should one of those slow burn Nothing As It Seems songs, not a ballad on mortality. There’s a place for that, just not here in my ears.

it would be nice to just get a hint of what the new Pearl Jam song sounds like, I feel like nothing says "we don't care much about it" than not describing its sound at all
