I love the Flanalogues, it's a real unique feature of his style; yes I agree it works best in Midnight Mass but I think the best argument for it in Usher is that it harks back to Poe's plush, verbose, more is more internal-thought prose style; I think Flanagan chose to nod at that even if it came across campy and laboured, and I like that

Also, though, I adored the monologues in Usher. Both Mary McDonnell and Carla Gugino are both such phenomenal talents that I would honestly watch an entire hour long monologue from each of them.

I would very much like to see a single-location, two-actor (or three, tops) movie from Flanagan, a la Benson & Moorhead

That's a lot of what Midnight Mass is and why it worked so well.

sure, a lot of his best scenes are two-character exchanges, like the "therapy" sessions between Riley and Father Paul, but Midnight Mass had a big cast and a lot of intertwining plot threads

Abstentia has the single location element but its not good. He was clearly learning.
But Oculus is amazingly good.

Hush has the single location element but no dialogue of course.

Damn so brutal. I loved it, and I was surprised by it. Never sure what was going to happen. The ending remind me of another great movie ; Son with Andy Matichak

I unironically enjoyed like a third of it, but then it descended into silliness

great: the beginning, including the part where John finds out about the scam (the part where he goes back to the mansion to thank them is subtle and effective), and the whole sequence where he goes out in the pig mask to seek out those responsible or complicit, which turns into a slasher for a fun moment that is all too brief

entertaining but increasingly silly: everything afterwards, from the point they all find themselves in the old dank warehouse and "the games" begin: the "rope" scene got me laughing out loud, and so did the faux-motional scene were Amanda and John hug it out and cry; they're both great actors, but neither of them could make THAT believable

Do you guys enjoy when your horror is silly? I have no problem when that's the tone of the whole movie, but I find it problematic when feels like a bad decision. I hate Malignant for example.

Having said that, I absolutely love bad or inept horror movies.

Having said that, I absolutely love bad or inept horror movies.

I tend to like my horrors pretty serious and sombre, but there are times when a light dusting of camp is good, if it helps to set off the darkness and "message" (I do like my social-commentary too); this year I absolutely adored both Skinamarink and Evil Dead Rise

I was enjoying Saw X for as long as I was enjoying it because there's just a hint of silly... until they poured a vat of silliness all over and the movie choked in it

MM is pretty awesome, but yes you will find a lot of scenes with characters talking. But i would say its way better than Usher or more scary at least.

I really dont like his melodramatic style but think Midnight Mass is his masterpiece.
