Probably would have made a good anchor for a lighter Disney Channel marvel "universe", but I can't see marvel execs or writers successfully putting anything together right now.
ZOMG they are making superhero movies that have female leads, something young girls can look up to and enjoy. what the hell is wrong with this world
If you're so worried about it, shouldn't you be demanding better and more original female characters, instead of retreads of existing male characters with no real backstories other than "I'm like X, but a girl".
Have some standards for your children!
Except maybe Joe if he's seen it, or even if he hasn't.

Re: The Marvels
We see the character as a child in the first captain marvel and then she became an example of a character who got snapped and came back to her mom having died in the hospital, kinda flipping the narrative on the captain America story in endgame of support groups for having lost people to the snap. They also then reused this a little with Yelena/Black Widow.
Either way, the actress felt natural in WandaVision and there’s established backstory

Re: The Marvels
No spoilers below, just opinions.
Okay this movie sucks! It has a lot of problems! We'll talk about those in a minute.
But just in terms of quality and divorcing it from all the behind-the-scenes stuff, it's weird to me that this is being treated as some kind of rock-bottom moment for Marvel when they've made so much worse shit. Ant Man 3 is worse than this! Thor 4 is WAY worse than this! Black Panther 2 is worse than this! The first Captain Marvel movie is worse than this! It is very strange that this one is being framed as "finally a step too far."
The movie's biggest problem, and it's a really big one, is that it feels completely anonymous in its filmmaking. Just about every decision in terms of how the story is told is the blandest, safest, squarest, plainest, most boring, scrubbed of any trace of character or expressive quality. It has that TV ad sheen, where everything is lit in overabundance and in perfect balance, where every location looks like a tiny plasticky set built 20 minutes ago, where every CGI aurora looks like a canned After Effects preset. The action is shot in the dullest way possible. It just has no personality at all.
The stakes are enormous as they always are but there is no gravity to any of it. There's a crazy amount of exposition scenes, there are plot points that make no logical sense, and there are some conceits that are so obnoxious that it feels like they were designed specifically to piss people off.
The movie's shining star is, by far, Miss Marvel. She is the beating heart of this movie. She brings along a lot of enthusiasm and vulnerability and humor. She elevates some extremely clunky dialogue; there are scenes where they're standing around discussing the movie's plot and she has to sell some very artificial, labored lines... and she almost manages to do it.
And I'm not just saying that Iman Vellani is good in the role, I'm saying the character of Miss Marvel is by far the most compelling and it should have been her movie. Her and her family are the focus of the first act of the movie, including the only fun action scene in the entire thing. And that's the part that had me going "whoa, I'm actually really enjoying this," before everything turned bad.
The rest of the cast does a serviceable job. There are some emotional beats that just don't feel authentic at all. And since when is Nick Fury such a silly goofball? It's very strange that he was the comedic relief in this film. His jokes were awful and he might as well not have been in this for all the impact he had on the plot or the movie's theme of forgiveness. The villain is well portrayed but underwritten, and the film culminates in a huge eyeroll because the thing that fixes everything is such an obvious solution that it's very strange that nobody thought of it before.
Bad movie, but Marvel has made worse, 4.5/10

Re: The Marvels
I kinda loved the movie. It doesnt care for a strong structure, or the villain, or even give some explanations, it was just a bunch of random scenes build upon an already established universe, and I liked for that, uncompromising and creative fun. Just like Jorge said, some scenes seemed to be design solely to break some balls, exactly like She Hulk, which I also loved. I apreciate when Marvel have this concept and never let go inspite of the hate, is a weird kind of integrity. This doesnt have to be all serious and important, there's plenty of that.
