Re: Lost Dogs: Official Album Thread
Think Lost Dogs would have been a lot less interesting, if it was just old versions of songs we had from before. Find it strange that people only wants what was released originally. And if it’s Pearl Jam, The Beatles, or other artists, everything new that is ever done, is always described as much worse.

It was recorded by me. I played drums on it, and I sang on itepilogue wrote:Man, if you don't know, I'm not sure anyone here doesHappy Trees wrote:Did anyone ever figure out what is up with the "Lost Dogs" version of "U"?epilogue wrote:I mean... it's not even close. As in when it was recorded and who plays drums on it, and why it was necessary?
We know why, how and when all the other stupid changes were made, but that one escapes me and the liner notes don't tell you shit.

Off topic, but I enjoy the changes George Lucas has made through time with the Star Wars OT. Again very interesting that we can have different versions, and updated graphics, more in line with the modern movies.
Lost Dogs isn’t even remotely as controversial or significant though. Just a fairly minor release for fans of the band, that the band made some (imo) interesting changes to, of versions most fans already had.

Nobody said that it needed to be old versions of songs we had from before. That doesn't apply to any argument being made. The complaint is that it's a weird frankenstein hodge-podge of good and bad and desecrated stuff that makes little sense. Old recordings (both released and unreleased) with perfectly fine vocals had new modern re-recorded Eddie vocals (and "Brother" was left instrumental). Great unreleased songs were left off and boring songs that everybody has purchased 100 times already were included unchanged - the opposite of what you are saying.Anders wrote:Think Lost Dogs would have been a lot less interesting, if it was just old versions of songs we had from before. Just because something of vintage origin is "new" doesn't automatically make it exempt from criticism. And I can think of more than a few artists releasing vintage material that isn't considered "much worse" by anybody.

Exactly, this is a massive problem in the age of streaming.tragabigzanda wrote:Everything remade does not inherently suck, but usually it does. That’s not a problem unless the band/record label moves to make it the first/only choice when someone searches for the song online or in a store. Then it becomes a huge creative ethical problem, IMO.
Unless you make efforts to find a copy of the Wishlist CD single, which probably hasn't been in print since the late 90s, you can't easily find a copy of the original U, if you even know it exists at all.
And it's not a problem limited to Pearl Jam, of course:

I think there should be a Lost Dogs 2, and it should include all non regular album tracks, including those that have been released elsewhere, as well as some unreleased b sides. Very similar to Lost Dogs 1. I have a playlist just like that. It’s excellent.

Anyone that is that deep into Pearl Jam that they want to listen to U(!), can easily find the original version.

Yes and no.
They can if they have the CD or a digital file but it's a lot harder to listen to since PJ seems to really want to canonize You instead.
I think it would be cool to have both versions on Spotify, for example.

I still have the wishlist single and would gladly share a rip if anyone wants to listen to the superior version of U once in a whileBirds in Hell wrote:Exactly, this is a massive problem in the age of streaming.tragabigzanda wrote:Everything remade does not inherently suck, but usually it does. It’s lost dogs 2 that will be the problem as songs will be remade by Andrew watt

LD version of Alone is vastly superior to the original. I can't believe I'm one of the few that thinks this.

What do you guys think is the worst song on LD? For me it’s a toss-up between Whale Song and Black Red Yellow
